Funny and truth

I have seen, but not bought, many books about 'making it in the art world'.
Those are self-help books, and maybe because of pride, I have problems reading them. But Helgueras book is like a 'The Loved One' of the art scene, it is very funny, and very truthfull. I totally recommend it to anyone that is interested in art, and every artist. Specially 'C-Class Artists'.

again, even though it's older, just like helguera's socially engaged art book --essential!

Agree or disagree, I love this book. It may sound cynical to some, certainly some will find it irritating, but it is about time someone stood up and said these things! Disagreeing could also be productive, but Helguera stands up like a human shield and takes a position...bravo! No I did not agree with everything, and yes I found myself falling into categories like "C-artist" and "Dwarfs on Shoulders of Giants" etc. etc. but I had begun to feel slightly bitter and misunderstood, as I think many artists do and have always done. I think Helguera's book is a structure for thinking, thinking about what one spends one's time doing. And the activity of art and art making itself. Somewhere I read that Helguera has been called "savvy" and this is a great word to describe this book. There to my mind seems to be a "smoke and mirrors" principle operating in the art world that things that go on socially are not meant to be named, discussed, and analyzed. As if they are too superficial. But actually, many artists (me included) have suffered from anger and depression and frustration trying to find their way -- I experienced reading Helguera's book as a beacon of hope and a finger pointing at BEHAVIOR as key these days to where we should be looking to clear up murky situations that only benefit a few (and I wonder, also knowing some of them personally, if they are really happy / satisfied).
Finally, this guy (Helguera) seems to be quite well connected himself, so I find it extra brave that he is willing and able to go right up to the limit, including at some points naming names. This book was waiting to be written for many years -- we all in the art world are familiar with bad treatment and unregulated lives and paths professionally.
The more people that stand up and try to do something about the situation the better. Again, bravo!
