The Best Novel of 2015 -- Hands Down!

From the first page, you will be swept away by this stunning portrayal of a marriage in crisis. Like a spark that grows into a conflagration, Jess's unease about her husband Chet's behavior and words flares into flames of pain and shock as she forces herself to admit the unthinkable.

In the midst of this turmoil, Haley, their teenage daughter, is also fighting to understand herself and her place in her family and the world. Upon learning of her father's selfish betrayals, she runs away and into grave danger. Both mother and daughter abhor conflict and can't find the inner strength to stand up and speak out for what they need and the outrage they feel. But the time has come to stand and face the fire.

Jessica is so much like many women. She loves Chet. She honors her marriage and family. She doesn't want to rock the boat. But what do you do when your boat's been capsized? Jessica has tough decisions to make that will impact not only her but her daughter.

This novel is beautiful. Set in the Yosemite area, the story has layers of symbolism and metaphor. California is on fire, and while fire destroys, it also burns the underbrush to ash so that new life can sprout. Ginny Yttrup parallels the outer and interior dangers--dangers of being scorched and burned. Her characters are thrown into the crucible and face a fire that might destroy them as the landscape around them burns.

If you read only one novel this season, make it Flames.You won't avoid being scorched yourself, but you will be glad for it. There is victory and healing at the end of the journey.

Ginny Yttrup’s latest novel, Flames, deals with a tender subject, the complexities of life – seen from multiple angles and multiples generations, as the flames of infidelity burn through a family. Jessica Weaver is a fire archaeologist who preserves the effects of wildfire on all areas of life. When infidelity blazes through her family, she is forced to take a close look at the motivations of her own life choices and examine the steps that brought her to this defining moment.

The desire to preserve her family unscathed is thwarted when her teenage daughter, Haley, also discovers her father’s infidelity. She chooses to run from the problem, creating another layer of firestorm that overlies the circumstances facing her parents.

While Haley flees to the wilderness, Jessica flees to her father, and Ted, becomes the lens through which we view the perspective of the parent who shepherds and supports his daughter through a trial not unlike one he walked through in his own marriage decades earlier. The faith and grace displayed through Ted and his wife Cretia, is a poignant reflection of God’s grace and mercy to His children no matter what trial they are facing.

This is Ginny Yttrup’s first self-published novel, and it was written from a heart’s desire to help people take a long hard look at the destructive consequences of careless choices. But, more than that, it is a novel that walks through the scorched earth of the heart and finds hope and healing through the searing flames of infidelity.

The words are rich, and carefully woven together so the reader is able to feel the pain, the terror, the hopelessness and the strength that is born out of such a trial. I’ve walked this journey in my own life, and I’ll confess there were times I just snot-sobbed over my book and had to lay it down and physically grieve through the pain of my own life circumstances. But, once on the other side of this novel, I felt stronger and more purposeful about my future than I’ve felt in years! SUCH HEALING was found in the pages of this novel for me!! This is a story birthed in love, and I am certain many lives will be saved and changed through reading this novel!

Good Story, but Frustrating to Read

"Flames" by Ginny L. Ytrrup

Okay, I confess, ...I've liked Ginny Ytrrup ever since I read "Words". I became a huge fan and devoured her novels as soon as I could. I enjoyed "Invisible", too, but not as much as "Words". Still.... For all that devotion, you'll notice that I only gave this novel 4-stars. I had thoughts of rating it only 3-stars. Why?

Ginny Ytrrup seems to be hung up on writing in the first-person. And worse, she has several characters narrating their own parts of the story. Several characters, writing in the first-person, in various parts of the story, makes the story difficult for an easy, enjoyable experience. A first-person account, from only one perspective, is okay, though I'm not a big fan. But from three or more characters? Yes, I followed the story, but it was frustrating. Because of the switch of which-person-narrative, the story didn't flow well as it should have.

"Flames" ultimately was a good, entertaining novel. But while reading it, there was a underlying frustration, a nagging feeling, that I did not overly enjoy. If you can read first-person narratives, from several differing points of view, you might enjoy it. I hope you do. I want the author to be encouraged to continue to write. But I also hope she reads this review and understands my objections to the narrative style.

Great, Informative, and enjoyable!

Art for Art's Sake and Literary Life: How Politics and Markets Helped Shape the Ideology and Culture of Aestheticism, 1790-1990 (Stages)

I discovered this writer when I was looking for opinions about the Nobel Prize Garcia Marquez, "Garcia marquez the Man and His Work," and I was fascinated for the accuracy about Colombian history and the way he related it with the author's life and ouvre.
Recently, curious to know what others books he had written; I found this one which catch my attention for its title, ART FOR ART'S SAKE, because it has been an old controversy.
The book includes two hundred years of philosophy, critic, literatura, and poetry in a rich account on the most brilliant exponents. Ranging from enlightment to Latin American literary Boom. Sometimes giving a litle touch on one of the personages, and other times giving a profound account of them because of its deep relation with the study he had in mind.
I greatly recommend this book because is richly informative and relaxing and enjoyable.

Great book with 2 major flaws

Elegantly written, thought-provoking, abrasive, and immensely informative, Bell-Villada's essay is nonetheless affected by two important flaws: its relative lack of focus, especially toward the end of the book, and its rigid application of a left v. right girdle. Bell-Villada obviously believes that the left is always good and progressive, with the possible exception of Joseph Stalin, whereas the right and the center are innately deficients, both morally and intellectually, for they either call for a return to the past or for a blind defense of the statu quo. The problem here is theoretical. Arguably, the milieu of artists is ill suited for this kind of Manichean mutilation. Many artists, in modern times, have adopted syncretic political dispositions comprising ingredients such as contempt for the statu quo and rejection of dominant values (especially utilitarianism), this leading them either to fascism or to bolchevism, with a great deal of transactions between the two (it is significant that Bell-Villada does not have much to say about Ezra Pound!). Most fascists were also revolutionary and anti statu-quo: in fact, many were attempting to revitalize socialism. Rather than using only "left v. right", Bell-Villada should have added other variables such as "romantic v. enlightenment" and "liberal v. anti-liberal", and use them all with a great deal of flexibility.

Jason David BeDuhn is an associate professor of religion at Northern Arizona University. He is the author of articles on Manichaeism and early Christianity, and he has coedited, with Paul Mirecki, two volumes of Manichaean studies: Emerging from Darkness: Studies in the Recovery of Manichaean Sources and The Light and the Darkness: Studies in Manichaeism and Its World.

Well written and insightful

Manichaeism is one of the vast range of religions associated with the Judeo-Christian group of traditions. It was founded in the 3rd century CE by a native of southern Mesopotamia named Mani, who identified himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ. Manichaeism was a vigorously missionary religion; it soon spread to the Roman Empire in the west and to China in the East. Some facts about Manichaeism were known before the 20th century, but they were almost all from polemic sources written to combat the religion as a "heresy." The 20th century, though, saw the discovery of a considerable number of documents written by Manichaeans themselves.

Jason BeDuhn has brought together a great quantity of information from the full range of these sources "to 'save' the Manichaeans for history by recovering how they proposed to save themselves" (from the Preface, p. x). BeDuhn carefully analyzes a variety of Manichaean beliefs and practices, pointing out their interdependence. He divides his study of each practice according to whether the documentation is from an eastern, central or western source. This is a helpful approach since the Manichaeans consciously adapted themselves to whatever cultural environment they found themselves in, and they spread over a very wide area indeed.

This review is not the place to summarize the entire content of the book, so I will state what I consider to be one of its most essential insights: the nature of the ritual meal of the elect. All the disciplines practiced by Auditors (members who lived less strictly) and the Elect (members who lived by the strictest rules) seem to have had as their focus the one meal a day consumed by the Elect, in which they, by the digestive processes of their ritually pure bodies, liberated "divine substance" from the food consumed (see chapter 4, Alimentary Rites). This seems to have been the salvific act in Manichaeism.

This book has numerous helpful tables which sort out the terminology used by Manichaeans. It also has a number of photographs of Zoroastrian meal rituals which are comparable to those of the Manichaeans. These are helpful in bringing to life a religion that died out centuries ago.

BeDuhn takes what can be characterized as a social-anthropological approach to the data. A very important book on Manichaeism written from the point of view of a historian is Manichaeism in Mesopotamia and the Roman East, by Samuel N. C. Lieu. The combination of these two books provides a considerable breadth of perspective on the Manichaeans as people and as a movement.

Great Book

This book opened my eyes to the whole religion of Manichaeism, which I had been previously unaware. For the layperson, its excellent to give one an overview of Manichaean traditions, east and west. It goes through the food ceremonies of both but provides the reader with insight through many translated Manichaean texts. It also contrasts and compares with modern traditions that are most likely similar in food ceremonial character with the ancient Manichaeans.

Also, the book is good for the scholar of Manichaeism or ancient Mediterranean religions, to give deep insight into the ritualism of this major religion, active during the time of early Christianity. I think understanding this tradition is important for students of Christianity as well, as I feel its aesceticism and ritualism as well as priesthood may have effected the Christians of the Roman Empire. Since Augustine was a Manichaean, its important in understanding the thinking of this Christian Father as well.

The Body, Myth and Ritual

With the publication of this revised Indiana University doctoral dissertation, the academy has given history of religions hobbyists an exciting new model for responsible ritual studies. BeDuhn's work is carefully researched and tightly organized, reconstructing the Manichaean alimentary, disciplinary and ritual complex while articulating a notion of ritual as a coherent approach to reality. Such concerns are of more than academic interest, and the fascinated reader soon forgives the peculiarities of style and structure endemic to the dissertation mode. This book would be enjoyed by all who have followed the last decade's interest in the body and the relation of myth and ritual.

Not worth the price

I was quite disappointed when this book arrived. I was expecting something significant and informative. While it is nice to have some of the information and research on this topic gathered in one place, the book is more like a leaflet or journal paper than an actual book. It's 60 pages in a large-type, not very dense form, with lots of clip-art style graphics to illustrate the main points. I can't believe that I paid $26.50 for this. That will teach me to buy a book sight-unseen because the title seems exciting and there is all of one positive review on amazon...

Great concise resource on gender diversity!

I highly recommend this book for individuals interested in gender diversity in computer science. In particular, people who want to learn more about gender diversity issues but don't want to or don't have time to sift through a large number of books and papers should read this book. The author succinctly describes reasons for gender diversity in computer science (e.g. gender gaps in risk-taking and confidence levels) and obstacles for women succeeding in computer science (e.g. stereotype threat), citing relevant research and providing further reading opportunities. Additionally, the book suggests a variety of best practices for changing classroom and advising interactions with students in order to improve retention of women in computer science.

Even if you are familiar with the literature on gender diversity in computer science, I recommend you read this book. Although I have extensive exposure to this topic, I found myself learning about new research results and enjoying the analysis and storyline presented by the author. Not only have I subsequently read some of the suggested texts, but I have also instituted some of the suggested classroom changes (e.g. pair programming, use of cards to randomize who gets called on) to my students' delight.
