The usual Usagi quality, but not much new
By shaxper
Usagi Yojimbo is the kind of quality work that transcends time, genres, demographics, and even age groups. It crafts a delicate and beautiful balance between honor and savagery, cute innocence and dark brutality, simple heart-warming stories and multi-part epics that shape a dense continuity. Whether or not you've ever been a fan of feudal Japanese culture, furry anthro characters, or independent, non-superhero comics, Usagi Yojimbo is a comic that can't help but impress even the harshest critic.

"Fox Hunt," Volume 25, comes in the wake of Return of the Black Soul, Usagi's biggest event storyline in several years. As a result, this volume contains a lot of stand-alone "back to normal" stories for Usagi, many of which feel like they've been done before. However, all are done well, and two truly stood out for me:

"Kitsune Gari" is a simple and fun story in which Gen falls victim to two supernatural trickster foxes in the woods. The character "Kitsune" is not actually featured in this story. "Kitsune" means "trickster fox" in Japanese.

The Two Part "Sakura" feels very much like a hodgepodge mixture of several previous stories in which a formidable and determined woman out for revenge employs Usagi's help in trying to save an innocent child from a corrupt gambling boss and his men. In a sense, Sakura is really a simple combination of Sakai's beloved characters Inazuma and Kitsune. The only thing that really makes this story any different is that this woman is from Gen's complicated past and (I believe) was last seen in Gen's Story way back in the day.

"Snitch" is another simple story played for comedy starring Gen and Stray Dog with Usagi playing witness to the familiar chaos that ensues as the two seek revenge on a snitch who was playing them against one another.

"The Beggar" was the first story in this collection that really stood out to me, in which Usagi's interest in a mysterious beggar opens the doorway to a story about imaginative espionage and subtle hints about larger events guiding the entire nation. There's something powerful about watching the massive political events shaping Shogunate Japan from the sidelines with Usagi. Sakai always provides us with a fresh and authentic set of eyes with which to view such events, giving us the sense of what this news would have meant to someone living in Japan at the time, never making it feel like the dry and straightforward history that you would find in a textbook.

"The Fortress" is the other winner of this volume, depicting the tragic circumstances of a temple caught in the mechanisms of political intrigue. Occasionally, Sakai hits a note so bitter and authentic that it rings of the works of Akira Kurosawa, and this was one of those stories.

"The Outlaw," in which Gen captures a wanted criminal and then comes to respect him, tries to be a powerful story with tears to be shed at the end, but somehow it felt cliche and familiar. Gen's been down the road of learning to put greed aside in time to weep in response to a tragedy that occurred because others don't understand what he's now learned a few too many times before.

"Saya" is a simple short that recalls the early Usagi adventures that felt more like parables on honor and righteousness than comic book adventures. You'll enjoy this one if you miss those old stories (or never read them). It's important to note that this story was originally published on the Dark Horse Myspace webpage (and is still there as I write this review), and so this is its first and only time in print.

All in all, this is a skippable volume for Usagi fans (nothing truly important nor memorable happens), but there are a few good tales here that you may not want to miss.

Another Top-Notch Effort From Stan Sakai!
By Daniel V. Reilly
I've been a fan of Stan Sakai's Samurai Rabbit ever since Dark Horse started publishing his adventures, and the book's masterful blend of History,Fantasy, Folklore, and whimsy still hasn't lost any of it's charm. USAGI YOJIMBO, BOOK 26: TRAITORS OF THE EARTH features a more Horrific storyline than usual (A reanimated army of corpses!), but the book is stacked with Sakai's usual array of Japanese History and Mythology, all rendered in his impeccable, intricate style. The collection features seven issues worth of Usagi's adventures, as well as two stand-alone stories from other Dark Horse books, a one-page GROO vs. USAGI strip, story notes, and a complete cover gallery, as well as an introduction, complete with illustration, by the legendary Walter Simonson. Entertaining, educational, funny, touching, and all-around excellent...I can't recommend USAGI highly enough.

A nice diversion
By Barry J Stephens
We own all of the Usagi series books. This was enjoyable because of its nature as a standalone collection of short stories and one-off adventures. The scabbard story reminded me of some Western story involving a punk gunfighter challenging the older, more restrained hero, and learning a lesson in the process. We also enjoyed seeing several facets to Gen's character (selfishness in the kitsune story, and the brief glimpse of his big heart in the bounty hunter story.) Not every book has to be leading us toward the eventual, final encounter with Jei; it's nice to have a diversion equivalent to sitting down and catching up with an old friend.
