About the Author
Gracia M. Grindal is Professor of Rhetoric and teaches preaching, the history of hymnody, and the devotional texts of Lutheran Nurture at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has had a lifelong interest in the writing of Martin Luther.

Good insights, but the Devil is in the details

I appreciated taking a look at the Apostles Creed, the Ten Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer from Luther's perspective, a refreshingly wholistic view. For example, Luther understands each prohibition in the Commandments as including a positive mandate - it is not enough to avoid stealing; one must actively work to prevent injustice which robs people of their needs.
As a Progressive Christian whose cosmology does not include a personified Satan, however, I found Luther's more than frequent references to the Devil as the source of trials and temptations to be less than helpful in my devotions. As a student of church history I was not surprised by this, but it was bothersome at points For the most part the devotional guide offers questions for meditation that allow one to draw a lesson from the text without requiring a personal Satan; in some instances, however, there was no such option.
