This book begin very nice and shows you the details on creating a storybook and writing an interface file. It also covers how make the screen controls available programmatically. The problem begins on page 115 when it says enter WKInterfaceController.openParentApplication. . . This does not work with Watch 2.0, the version that came out when the book was published. Spend a few minutes on Google and you learn that WKInterfaceController.openParentApplication is fully depreciated and removed from the watch kit API. I found solutions using Google, was looking for a quick reference guide, this book is not that.

I enjoyed the reading from there to the last chapter displaying ...

Well to be honest this is a review in progress. I started with fear that this books is already out of date in regards to the latest dev kit. After reading the other review here where the previous person said at page 115 things diverge from the newest Dev Kit , I thought well I'll read 1-114 pages. But I skipped straight to Chapter 5 , Displaying Notifications. I enjoyed the reading from there to the last chapter displaying Glances. Now I 'll go back to pages 1-114 and see how they are. So I'll add to my review again in the future . I am sure the author is working on the next version. It would be nice if he could chime in and at least say what chapters to flat out avoid if any.

In Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, traffickers assert power through conspicuous displays of wealth and force, brandishing high-powered guns, gold jewelry, and piles of cash and narcotics. Police, for their part, conduct raids reminiscent of action films or video games, wearing masks and riding in enormous armored cars called “big skulls.” Images of these spectacles circulate constantly in local, national, and global media, masking everyday forms of violence, prejudice, and inequality. The Spectacular Favela offers a rich ethnographic examination of the political economy of spectacular violence in Rocinha, Rio’s largest favela. Based on more than two years of residence in the community, the book explores how entangled forms of violence shape everyday life and how that violence is, in turn, connected to the market economy.

Erika Robb Larkins shows how favela violence is produced as a marketable global brand. While this violence is projected in disembodied form through media, the favela is also sold as an embodied experience through the popular practice of favela tourism. The commodification of the favela becomes a form of violence itself; favela violence is transformed into a commercially viable byproduct of a profit-driven war on drugs, which serves to keep the poor marginalized. This book tells the story of how traffickers, police, cameras, tourists, and even anthropologists come together to create what the author calls the “spectacular favela.”

Thorough, but difficult to read

Maybe I'm just unfamiliar with the style of a British textbook, but I found it very difficult to follow. The text rambles from one statement to another, with no logical flow, structure or summaries of introduction or conclusion. It's certainly a thorough treatment of the field if your interest is understanding differences in international practice, although it's not targeted at someone who wants to learn to actually perform the accounting.
