About the Author

Michael H. Hunt is the Everett H. Emerson Professor of History Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of several books, including The World Transformed, 1945 to the Present: A Documentary Reader, Second Edition (OUP, 2014) and Ideology and U.S. Foreign Policy (2009). He is also the coauthor, with Steve Levine, of Arc of Empire: America's Wars in Asia from the Philippines to Vietnam (2012).

This textbook might as well have been written by Joseph Stalin or Bernie Sanders. The author disgraces himself by repeating every discredited socialist fallacy imaginable. The book is pure leftist propaganda, so it is no surprise that the economic crackpots and crypto-Marxists who teach in American universities would assign this trash to their students. With a constant barrage of such propaganda in the schools, it is no wonder that most Americans want more government control over the economy -- the very reason for all their troubles.

Dull writing tinged with some good old-fashioned racism

Always looking for a good story of exploration, adventure, and derring-do, I decided to give Alan Moorehead's "The White Nile" a go. I slogged through the first several pages, hoping that the prose would pick up and capture me. Nope. So I gave it a few more pages, and it still didn't pick up. So I stopped and read a different book. A week later I came back to Moorehead and gave it another go, this time making it 50+ pages in. I still hate it.

I find Moorehead's writing both incredibly dull and incredibly racist. I could forgive both of these issues if I was reading a Victorian adventurer's firsthand account of searching for the source of the White Nile. But for a mid-20th century (although, by date of his birth, perhaps too firmly rooted in Edwardian times), it is incredibly grating and distracting. Please note that I'm not exclaiming that Moorehead is (was) a racist and therefore his work does not deserve to be read. Instead I'm saying that I find his writing lifeless, with his penchant for leaning on silly and racist stereotypes of the peoples his subjects encountered making his prose all the more dull.

I may give this book another go at some point in the future, but I doubt I'll find it any less boring.

Two years after the success of "The White Nile" (1960), Moorehead spinned further yarns of African adventurers and Nilotic history. This time the year span is from 1798 to 1858 and the location is on the Blue Nile, dealing with Sudan and Ethiopia. European exploration of this lesser but not least branch of the mighty river started further back in time because of its easier accessibility from the Red Sea coast. After a brief description of the ancient history and geography of the river, we meet Bruce, a Scottish explorer who despite his meticulous research and extraordinary scripts passed at his return home as a megalomaniac. Successive events find Napoleon's invasion accompanied by the savants and the destruction of the Mameluk rule that really represented the turning point of the modern history of the valley of the Nile. After Napoleon's departure the Turk Muhammad Ali regained power destroying a greater part of the Sudanese population. The last part of the book deals with King Theodore of Ethiopia, a mad chieftain that captured and held in ransom over 400 people for four years, and that was overcome by the British army.
This book can be read alone or better as a sequel of "The White Nile". The narration is equally effective and the limits are those of a book written in the 1960's. The episodes are less dealing with only four major topics. I read the book in a day and half, considering it took me three days to read the "The White Nile". Now I have to look for further stories by this great writer.

"The sunburst of Victorian courage and imagination"

An excerpta from the book's epilogue seemed to make the most appropriate title for what I found one of the most engrossing reads of the last months. It took me only three days to gallop through this epical work that is dated exactly 1960. Yes, a book that has been in print for almost 50 years and still reads like it was published yesterday! Alan Moorehead (1910-1983) was a famous Australian journalist and prolific writer, that enjoyed great success during his lifetime and whose work covered many subjects, mostly dealing with exploration, history, military campaigns.
"The White Nile" is the condensed but detailed history of the mostly British exploration of the sources of the Nile, that interested European society as a geographic/expansionistic/colonial curiosity and a metaphysical necessity in the second part of the Nineteenth Century. Starting from Burton and Speke's journey (see if you can "The Mountains of the Moon"), followed by Speke's and Grant's adventure and Baker of the Nile (read Pat Shipman's "To the Heart of the Nile") long permanence in the region of the great African lakes we are introduced into the mystery, magic and misery of the then unknown region Central Africa. Follow Livingstone and Stanley's adventures, whose minute explanation clarifies some often erroneous opinions on these incredible characters. Through the analysis of Egyptian relationship with colonial powers (the opening of the Suez canal) and the Sudanese people and the economical reasons (slavery and ivory trade) for warfare we are introduced to Gordon and his "skakespearian" (the Author's attribute) fate. The German born Emin Pasha's surrealistic life and rule of Equatoria concludes the great adventurous epoch, before the opening up of the river by the English defeat of the Islamic revolt in Sudan.
This book has been criticized for its "whiteman's" historical view and has also been defined as racist. Naturally it is dated and today we have a much more open global perspective. History consequently is rewritten every few decades. However, balancing the pro's and con's, I believe this book is a milestone for a first approach to the fascinating history of the exploration of the Nile and of Central Africa. Many of the modern issues of Sudan and Uganda were born in the moment these countries were opened up by European powers, and Moorehead's work definitely is useful to understand what is going on today.
If it were possible to make a comparison between Moorehead and more modern writer, I would choose Peter Hopkirk, whose history writing is similarly anglocentric and adventuresome.
I strongly recommend this book for its content but also for its form that turns non fiction into a great roller coaster ride into history. The best way to learn!

About the Author
Dr. Alexander I. J. Forrester is Lecturer in Engineering Design at the University of Southampton. His main area of research focuses on improving the efficiency with which expensive analysis (particularly computational fluid dynamics) is used in design. His techniques have been applied to wing aerodynamics, satellite structures, sports equipment design and Formula One.

Dr Andras Sobester is a Lecturer and EPSRC/ Royal Academy of Engineering research Fellow in the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Southampton. His research interests include aircraft design, aerodynamic shape parameterization and optimization, as well as engineering design technology in general.

Professor Andy J. Keane currently holds the Chair of Computational Engineering at the University of Southampton. He leads the University's Computational Engineering at the Design Research Group and directs the rolls-Royce University Technology centre for Computational Engineering. His interests lie primarily in the aerospace sciences, with a  focus on the design of aerospace systems using computational methods. He has published over two hundred papers and three books in this area, many of which deal with surrogate modelling concepts.

About the Author
Owen Chadwick was Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge from 1968 to 1983. He has written many books, including "The Reformation", "The Victorian Church", "The Popes and European Revolution", as a result of which he was awarded the Wolfson Prize for history, and "Michael Ramsey".

About the Author
Dennis Higley was a sixth-generation Mormon who became an Elder’s Quorum president while still in his early twenties. About a decade later, he was ordained a High Priest and called to serve on the Stake High Council. Rauni Higley worked as a translator and language coordinator for the LDS Church for more than fourteen years and held teaching positions in both Sunday school and the Relief Society. Her privileged position allowed her to study Mormon history from many books not generally available to LDS membership, which eventually led her to share with her husband her growing concerns about discrepancies hidden by the Church. Together they launched an intensive private study of the “facts” of Mormonism with guidance from God and His Word. This ultimately led Dennis and Rauni out of the darkness and into the light.

This is an excellent voice against the deception that is the Mormon church. Truly eye-opening, this book provides a factual synopsis of the deceptions of the Mormon church. It is a quick read, which I think is well-suited to people's busy lives. It provides a quick explanation of each point and provides references to additional material (e.g. other books, Mormon scriptures) for readers who desire further investigation. This book has proven so very useful for Christian friends who thing Mormonism is "alright for the most part," then they learn more about it from this book and realize that's not the case. I keep two around the house in case the missionaries come by too. Thank you for writing this book; it has impact.

To his utter shock, the story was received by Gold and his readership with great glee, was among the most popular GALAXY ever published (or Pohl) and one of the most anthologized. The sculpted consumer-obsessed society was used again by Pohl a few years later in the novelette THE MAN WHO ATE THE WORLD which was far more credible (consumption-obsession as a kind of personal tyranny) and, perhaps for that very reason, much less successful, barely remembered.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Frederik Pohl (b. 1919) has been at the center of science fiction for three-quarters of a century. As an editor at GALAXY, Gold’s successor for a decade, as the editor a decade earlier of ASTONISHING and other competitors of ASTOUNDING, as the science fiction editor at Bantam Books and as an editor of the first original anthology series, STAR SCIENCE FICTION, Pohl has been perhaps more influential than any editor other than John W. Campbell. His novels and short stories alone or in collaboration since THE SPACE MERCHANTS have been at the cutting edge of the field; GATEWAY and MAN PLUS each won both Nebula and Hugo in successive years. Writers he first published or made prominent as an editor include R.A. Lafferty, Cordwainer Smith and Joanna Russ. His mainstream novel, THE YEARS OF THE CITY is probably his finest. He is a Grandmaster of the Science Fiction Writers of America. His most recent novel, published in 2011 is ALL THE LIVES HE LED.

Social and science and economics

I read this first decades ago, and loved it for the plot itself.
Reading it again, I understand that I was not just enjoying the plot, but getting a deep but subtle commentary on science, economics, interpersonal relationships, and politics hidden away inside a fun story. I know well-crafted stores influenced me subtly in many ways in later life, and I thank Pohl for being the master writer and laying the groundwork for critical thinking in me.
You will have a good deal of fun with this, and face questions that we still haven't answered.

The Midas Plague

There are 6 introductory sections for one novelette! And they are pretty bad, too -- cold, incomplete, and dull. As far as I can tell, all those introductions are good for nothing for but padding the page count.

The story is marred by more than a dozen OCR transcription errors and one bad duplicate passage. I know the budget must be tight, but come on.

The jacket is a nice touch, though.

The story itself is a wacky "what if". As another reviewer posted, it depicts people behaving irrationally in an irrational world. That makes it more of a satire rather than a serious work. Pohl manages to pull off the satire long enough to carry the story.

An old friend

I remembered reading this long ago and went looking for it. The chance to put it on my Kindle and have it to read anytime thrilled me. I'll be gathering in more of this Author as well - a golden-ager and one I always appreciated.

It tells a good story, the roll reversal between wealthy and poor was why I remembered it in the first place; it is more than mere entertainment.
