About the Author
Rachel Basch is the author of two previous novels: The Passion of Reverend Nash (named one of the five best novels of 2003 by The Christian Science Monitor) and Degrees of Love. Basch has reviewed books for The Washington Post Book World, and her nonfiction has appeared in n+1, Parenting, and The Huffington Post. Basch was a 2011 MacDowell Colony Fellow. She received the William Van Wert Memorial Fiction Award for an excerpt from The Listener. She currently teaches in Fairfield University’s MFA Program and in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program at Wesleyan University. She lives in Connecticut.

Learning to Listen

From the moment you read the first page of Rachel Basch's intriguing book, you will not be able to put it down. The story describes the struggles of a teenager with problems at once typical and unusual and the struggles of the teenager's therapist to help both the young patient and himself. While the teenager is dealing with problems adjusting to the first year of college and questions of identity more generally, the therapist faces the challenges of reconciling with his daughters and finding new love after his marriage has ended, a quest which cannot be fulfilled until he reveals some secrets of his own to his family.
Through their journey together, both "the listener" and his patient learn to reach out to their families, their community, and the world in general with compassion and love. As a reader, you will experience a similar journey, guided by a novelist who is a master of storytelling, painting compelling characters, and providing deep understanding of the human heart. Rachel Basch captures the perspectives of men, women, parents, and children with compassion and realism. You will long remember the characters and suspenseful plot of this novel.

A beautiful novel

I was hooked from the very beginning of Rachel Basch’s beautiful new novel. The book revolves around Noah – alternately known as Leah – who is struggling to come to terms with his sexual identity, and his college psychologist, Malcolm, a widower and sometimes bewildered father of two adult daughters, who is trying to find his footing in middle age. Noah seeks acceptance – from his peers, from his mother, and from Malcolm – but, ultimately, what he really needs is to accept himself. Malcolm, meanwhile, is navigating complex relationships in his own life – with his daughters, a new lover, and a philandering friend and his wife. As Malcolm tries to help Noah find his “true self,†their lives become entangled in unexpected ways.
Basch deftly gets to the emotional center of her characters and explores the bonds between friends, lovers, parents and their children, and therapists and their patients with great insight. Tension builds through the novel as secrets are revealed and truths gradually uncovered. I became so emotionally invested in her characters and in the connections they made with one another that I found it hard to put the book down!

A fine read

Rachel Basch writes with such heart. Malcolm Dowd, the main character, is a man who elicits great sympathy as he tries to manage his counseling practice, his relationships with two adult daughters, and his own desires after the death -- some years ago -- of his wife. His sensitivity to the painful coming-of-age issues of his trans-gender patient, Noah, is so believable and beautifully rendered. A fine read.
