I Agree--the Best in this series!!!

This is another book set in the world of Rokugan, from the Legend of the Five Rings game which has a Fantasy Japan/Asian setting. The previous books smacked of your usual game-based fiction weaknesses (usually just average writers working with someone else's world--which is ok for fan-fic, but not as satisfying usually, as good writers working in their own world). Ed Bolme is another gaming insider. This is good, since he actually knows the world of L5R. The best of the previous books was written by the one other author who also knew the material well. But I was impressed by Ed's writing. This is easily the best of the 8 books that have been published so far. The book starts when the Emperor Toturi is in the grips of possession by some dark power. The only way to save the Empire is by committing seppuku while he still has enough control. So Toturi finds himself in Jigoku, the world of the dead. The dark power threatens to shut the Gate between the living and the dead, so the living can no longer commune with dead ancestors (something very important to all of Rokugan)... The story is told with a lot of energy, strong characterization and a deft feel for the Asian/Samurai/Fantasy setting of the world. I enjoyed this. Although, I'm biased, since I've been following the story and the game for many years.

A most satisfying entry in the L5R series

Having read them all, I'd rate The Steel Throne in the Top 3, along with The Crane, and The Dragon, in no particular order.
While the previous 7 books in the series deal with the doings of one main character within a short timespan (a few months, at most), this one spans the decades long conflict known The War Against Spirits and there is no main character. Instead, each chapter centers on one character, then jumps forward one month, or several years, to the next. This, far from being confusing, makes for an entertaining and dynamic read.
When dealing with game-based fiction, or shared-world fiction in general, one must thread carefully the narrow line between fulfilling reader expectations and crafting a compelling read, with a few surprises to boot. In my opinion, Mr. Bolme has succeded. Most bases are covered, questions long raised are finally answered, and a plot and characters only hinted at in one-liners on a piece of cardboard are made alive in this most satysfing novel.

A really great intro to the Four Winds

This introduction to the Four Winds Saga takes the daunting task of covering almost 30 years of events that chronicle the growth and fate of 5 main characters. The astounding part is that this feat is pulled off with style and skill. Each of the characters gets his or her crowning moments and yet they all still contribute to the main arc for the book: the spirit wars.
On it's own, this book is a fabulous introduction to the world of Rokugan (from the game, "Legend of the Five Rings.") it's a great place for anyone to use as a jumping on point for this richly detailed world. And for those that have been following the Four Winds arc in the game, this story fills in many of the details - giving us a great background for why the characters are the way they are. The observant reader may also discern hints about these characters' destinies...
Overall, I'd have to say this is the best book in the L5R series to date. A great read!

Highly Enjoyable Read

I really enjoyed “The Do-Over” and decided to try another book from MK Schiller. Again she did not disappoint and I loved this book as well. The story was basically about damaged Marley who did not do relationship. However, she and Rick, a consultant brought to reengineer the company she worked in, shared a strong physical attraction. Initial flirtations led to a friends with benefits relationship. Rick was very protective of Marley and wanted more out of the relationship which she pushed back. The book was funny and yet had its serious moments plus Marley’s unusual family supplemented wonderfully to the story.

He's a Magic Man....

This bk has one adorable Hero, Rick, and is filled with sexual tension, it's flirty fun early on, there's hot sex scenes and plenty of romantic drama because of the h/Marley's fear of commitment due to her trauma from the past. Two people you know are going to fall in love but the story takes its time in the telling. That Rick though....what a keeper and definitely book boyfriend worthy. Rick's a classy alpha...very possessive from the get go, even before he and Marley became an item (jaw clenching over guys numbers in her phone). He's bossy, protective, did I mention possessive? sexy hot, sexual innuendo smirking, romantic, gentlemanly, sweet and all kinds of wonderful. (Yea, I'm gushing) And he supposedly looks like Chris Pine!

What bothered me? I don't like it when it takes one of the characters f-o-r-e-v-a to come clean with their dilemma. Marley sort of got on my nerves when she was pushing Rick away (due to fear) and made me impatient when I wanted her to just tell Rick her problem and move forward with it. But, yes, yes, (forehead smack) I know...that's part of the story. The build up to the "reveal" of the problem, of course, leads to some angst. The angst is not over the top though (I hate angst...love the drama, but my impatience and angst? Uh uh...they don't mix well).

Loved Marley's funky family....they're all named after someone musical. But Marley's gay OCD friend Dillon was endearing. Adam, Marley's soon to be brother-in-law is loveably cool. And just wait until you get to Adam's wedding vows to Marley's sister Stevie. To die for! (Be ready to swoon, ladies). It's a shame the author didn't write Adam/Stevie's bk first. There was just enough of these two characters to make you feel like they were worth reading more of (you'll see).

Overall a cute story with a wonderful Hero but wished the HEA hadn't been so rushed. It would have been more enjoyable for me to have had Rick/Marley's HEA drawn out longer with more dialog. Will be looking forward to what this author does next.

I am in half way through but can tell you already that this is must have for ad agency. Great choice of 230 campaigns (print ads, product designs, installations). Definitely it is not the shining book to just look at on the bookshelf.

What a book! This book is a creative gem. So much creative candy. I did not know what to do with myself. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the images, and stories from around the world makes it all the more engaging. This is my reference manual and inspiration for those difficult projects that need a bit more creativity harnessing. My creative director stole it for 3 days and hesitantly gave it back. It is the kind of book that you have to see and and read to benefit from it. I would encourage anyone
interested or working in design, marketing, or advertising to purchase it. It's a beautiful, beautiful book!!!!!!!!!

I accidentally found this book at my university library...and I found it to be a great piece of work.

I found the examples of good advertising to be really inspiring.

At the least, it is a beautiful book to gain inspiration from. But at its height, the connections made by the author are really worthwhile.

(He had observed the work of men "who could carve a letter in steel that had at least six, and perhaps sixty, times the resolution of a modern laser printer.") In this study, Man puts Gutenberg and the printing press in historical context by giving detailed pictures of the political situation in Europe at the time, on an international scale all the way down to a city level. He gives technical details on how a printing press works, and how to craft the movable type. In addition he gives a biography of the man, and attempts to construct a chronology of his publications. Man offers much speculation to fill holes in the historical record, but is very clear about what is generally accepted fact, and what is not. Compared to the printing press revolution, the Internet one is small potatoes. Before Europe's first printed book in 1455, information was carried in hand-copied volumes so expensive they could be owned only by priests and aristocrats. Then in "a historical eyeblink," John Man writes, a book that took two months to copy by hand could be turned out at the rate of 500 a week. Little is known with certainty about Johann Gutenberg, the man behind the change, not even his year of birth (traditionally given as 1400). But Man suggests that Gutenberg may have developed printing technology while trying to cash in on a craze in the 1430's for small mirrors, used by pilgrims to capture the healing powers of relics at Charlemagne's tomb. The mirror-making venture bogged down in legal disputes between Gutenberg and his partners, but surviving court records contain mysterious references to "another secret art" -- perhaps the hand-held mold that could mass-produce metal type. Gutenberg intended to make a fortune publishing the first universal missal, but when clerics could not agree on an authorized text, he settled on his second choice, the Bible. By 1500, more than 15 million books had been printed in Europe. Loved it until the end

Little is know about the history of Gutenberg's invention, and the history of the man himself. John Man does an excellent job of bringing this story to life. Placing Gutenberg in historical context, and infusing the tale with rich background color to give you a feel of 15th century Europe.
But at the end of the book there is a very protracted story of how Martin Luther used printing to further his cause. This goes on way to long, twenty plus pages. If I wanted to read so much about Luther, I would get a book about Luther!
If it was not for this last part, I would easily have given this book five stars. I am a printer by profession, and I also teach about printing at a local community college. I love printing history, and this book is now a proud member of my library on the subject.
Man spins a very good tale about the birth of this profession, that has not been covered very well before. Writing with such zeal and humor as if he is speaking directly to this reader.

Primarily Historical Secondarily Biographical

I have had the privilege of seeing pages of a Gutenburg Bible. There is only one complete Bible that remains in a private collection, and the balance are part of the inventories of museums or places like The Library of Congress. An exceptional example can be found at The Morgan Library in NYC, and thanks to a special group of people the work can also be viewed on the internet. To give an idea of the value of one of these Bibles, the last single page I saw at an antiquarian book show was priced at $30,000. If an entire book were to come to auction the price it would bring would be measured in many millions of dollars. William Gates, CEO of Microsoft, paid in excess of $35,000,000 for the Leicester Codex, a one of a kind notebook from the pen of Leonardo Da'Vinci. That is the record ever paid for a single, "book".
As momentous a contribution that Gutenburg gave the world details about his life are few. Even when he had established himself as a printer of some renown, there are many years, and even groups of years that are blank, or filled by only supposition. There are times that the recording of a lawsuit is all that are available to document where he was at a given point in time. And as with many inventions that have changed the course of history, there are the usual arguments over who actually invented what, and then there are the pretenders that history had accepted for centuries.
Those expecting a biography of the inventor will not be satisfied by this book. This is less the fault of the writer than the lack of documentary evidence about the subject. What the reader is given in great detail is a description of history before during and after the printing press became a reality. The Bible that is so routinely associated with the name of Gutenburg has certain volumes that are not only exceptional for the type but also for the decoration that was produced. The fragment of the picture on the cover only hints at the beauty of these books.
And this is the greatest criticism I have of this book. The work of Gutenburg was visual, and in many examples exceptionally beautiful. I cannot reconcile these facts with a book that offers a single black and white photograph of one page of this historic Bible. The invention of the press that Gutenburg created is exceptional, and exceptionally complicated. All the reader is offered is a brief description on how complicated it is, and two pages with a handful of drawings that raise more questions than they answer. The author should have let readers decide how much effort they wished to invest to understand this invention rather than presuming readers would be pleased with the barest of details.
If you have never read anything about this topic, the book will serve you better than if you already have knowledge in excess of the name of the man and what he created. The author also makes note of the idea that someday all books could be in electronic form and stored in, "hyperspace". I hope he meant cyberspace.
