Interesting, Intense, Involving, Intelligent, Insightful, etc...

I just finished this novel and I have to say that I was blown away by Baldwin's writing. I disagree with one of the reviewers who wrote that this should be required text for high school or jr. high students. For one thing, the subject matter is way too mature for their brains to digest at such a young age. This is a novel for intelligent adults with an open mind. If you are a homophobe or have any racism residing in your heart then don't read this novel, because you will not enjoy it whatsoever. If I would have read this before the age of thirty I would not have liked it and probably wouldn't have finished reading it(this is unequivocally a very adult novel). That being said, you will be hard-pressed to find a more gritty, brilliant, fiercly told story than this one. I personally believe that the dialogue between the main charactiers is excellent and very real. As complex, flawed, and often times even repugnant the main characters are, you still can't help but to care about each one of them as if they were your friend or loved one. This is the beauty of this novel in my opinion - Baldwin's ability to really develop each character. This is definitely a novel that is character-driven and upon finishing the novel you can't help but feel a bit disheartened knowing that your time spent with them is now over. It leaves you yearning for more!

This is my first novel by Baldwin and I am off to the bookstore (sorry Amazon, I just can't wait) to purchase a few more (Go Tell It On A Mountain will be my next). He was such a brilliant, brave, unique writer who displays so much courage in his prose that it's impossible to not admire the man. Also, I really enjoy reading authors like this who paint a completely different picture of Americana than we are typically accustomed to (i.e. Kerouac, Bukowski, Vonnegut, etc...).

Overall, the book was great. Once you get into it (for me it started on page 1) it's very difficult to put down no matter how heavy and often times disturbing it can be. However, racism is always disturbing no matter how you slice it. Baldwin just doesn't slice it in thin easy to digest pieces that's all. So if you want to read a 'nice', 'sweet' interacial love story don't purchase this. However, if you want to challenge yourself and allow your mind to expand and actually THINK, then by all means this is the perfect book for you.

the decades and was favorably impressed. I have more life experience and more contact with black
people now so it has more meaning and deeper meaning to me at this point in my life. Balldwin was
obviously way ahead of his time. A brilliant writer. I am glad I gave it another go.

Great book

Rented this and it was in great condition. The shipping was perfect and came right on time. The book itself is a bit difficult to read unless you have a very large vocabulary and you understand psychology. I needed the dictionary online, a lot. Other than that, everything was great - I'd recommend to anyone!

Basic but competent

This work is a basic overview of writing public policy. There's nothing new here (and not much you couldn't find for free with a Google search). Taking this book's lessons to heart would certainly make you an adequate memo/etc. writer, though your work would never be accused of being inspired. Perhaps a more fitting title: 'The Middle-Manager's Approach to Writing Public Policy'

Excellent How to and Presentation

I am using this book in a Masters of public adminisration course on Emergency Management and my first brush through it indicates that it will be a useful tool for 1) writing graduate level papers concerning public policy, and 2) a painless introduction to process, content and delivery for all current media used in the public policy arena.

The book is written in easy to understand prose, well organized, and even comes with recomended short cuts for skimming and maximizing value for time invested.

This was a required text in my policy class and I don't feel like it helped me at all.It was one of those classes where the professor relies on the textbook to teach us how to write policy, and this book is short and kind of has the tone of assuming the reader knows the basics. I wish a different book was used, this book might be more appropriate for an average joe looking for help to write formal memos.

I bought it for someone else whose native language is English and wanted to learn Nepali. I am a native speaker of Nepali and by listening through the CDs and going through the phrase book, I can say that great care was taken to come up with such a good product for a reasonable price. In the past, I have bought other books from Nepal for the very person to learn Nepali but those books were not very friendly in terms of learning Nepali. We all wish there was Rosetta Stone for Nepali language but probably there is not much demand for such a niche language.The item comes with 3 audio cds and a handy phrase book. This product will not do miracles and make you hold complex conversation in Nepali, but will help you lay a solid foundation of Nepali that you can build upon. If you master this book/cd, you will be able to hold simple conversations and be able to figure out things.
Most of the people speak English in Kathmandu-the capital city of Nepal, but tourists can find this product very helpful. However, this is not your Lonely Planet guide to Nepal or language conversion dictionary. You will have to study the book and follow the CDs before you embark on your journey.

The CDs are audio CDs that can be played on CD/DVD/Blue Ray players, laptops. If your are technically curious, the files in the CDs are in .cda format. If you want to be able to listen to CDs on your mp3 player or other portable devices, you will have to convert the .cda format to .mp3 format and then put the lessons on your portable device. There are numerous softwares that copy and convert audio CDs to mp3 format and couple of those are Windows Media Player, Nero that come loaded on most of laptops/computers.

Good pace and great content

I like the layout of the program, stating with the alphabet and vowels. The pace is good and the voice is relatively clear. This is my favorite Nepali pack yet and I can confidently recommend it as a good starting point for anyone who wants to learn Nepali.

Wonderful Book and CDs

The book and CDs are extremely helpful. The woman's voice is pleasant and she speaks very clearly. The book follows along with what is on the CD perfectly. Helpful grammar points are written in the beginning of the book. The speaker says each phrase twice. They are short, everyday sentences that one would use in daily conversation.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who would like to visit Nepal or has Nepalese neighbors. It was so much better than I expected and it is a very reasonably-priced book. The book fits easily in a purse so you can study the language as you go about your day.
