Review

“Anne McWhir’s edition of The Last Man is first rate! Mary Shelley’s novel is well served by a careful editor who provides an informed introduction, comprehensive annotations, and well-chosen appendices that contextualize this richly complex novel―Shelley herself would have been pleased!” ― Charles E. Robinson, University of Delaware

'All The World Has The Plague!'
By mp
Mary Shelley's novel, 'The Last Man' is a work which is slowly gaining the critical attention it richly deserves. Fans of 'Frankenstein' will be astounded at how much deeper Mary Shelley's indictment of 'masculine' visionary Romanticism, technology, and the faults of humanity go in 'The Last Man'. At the same time, the novel is fraught with problems and contradictions which give an already paranoid work a whirling sense of internal dementia.
The action of 'The Last Man' takes place between 2073 and 2100 AD. England is ripe for change as the last King of England abdicates his throne in response to public outcry for a more democratic form of government. Lionel Verney, a shepherd, is drawn out of a life of wildness and crime by Adrian, the former crown prince of England. The charismatic Lord Raymond enters the story as the lover of Lionel's sister, Perdita, and the newly-elected Lord Protector of England. Torn between his love of power and his affections for his wife and a persistent attachment to Evadne, a Greek woman, Raymond renounces his political position and flees to Greece. There, he leads a military campaign to establish Greek independence and bring about the end of the Turkish empire.
Then, the Plague takes over. The nondescript malady has wiped out the population of Constantinople just as Raymond conquers it, making his victory meaningless. Word of the plague's virulence comes in from Asia and America, and from the southern, eastern, and western corners of the world, the plague begins to encroach inward towards Europe and England. The remainder of the novel tracks Lionel and Adrian's attempts to save the human race from utter annihilation.
In 'The Last Man', Mary Shelley gives us a horrifying, desolate prophecy of the future, when religion, technology, and human effort are all exposed as meaningless. Although many might say that she also abandons the redemptive possibilities of art, I think that art provides the novel's only hope. Mary Shelley's dependence on art of every format is clear in the novel's influences - She has Lionel refer to literature, including the works of Daniel Defoe, Charles Brockden Brown, Ann Radcliffe, Homer, Shakespeare, and Jonathan Swift among others.
The novel is fraught with problems of gender and power relations. At any moment of emotional weakness, Lionel calls himself 'girlish' or 'womanly,' and the novel seems to privilege women who are selfless and submissive. On the other hand, as Morton Paley's introduction points out, the plague itself is consistently described as female, at one place referred to as 'The Queen of the World'. With regard to power relations, Lionel continually mentions that in the dying world of humanity, social distinctions have all been abandoned - and yet there are still references to his 'servant' or those of other people. The most problematic scene in the novel revolves around racial distinctions when Lionel encounters a dying black man in London.
There are a million things to talk about in 'The Last Man,' and a novel so rich for discussion deserves to be read by as many people as possible. This is a book I warmly recommend, so pick it up and discover that there is more to Mary Shelley than 'Frankenstein'.

The Beginning of the End
By Greg Hughes
In "The Last Man" (1826) Mary Shelley conceived a plot device that would eventually be used by a string of writers: an apocalyptic plague that virtually wipes out the human race. From "The Last Man" would come books like "The Scarlet Plague" (1912), "Earth Abides (1949) and "The Stand" (1978), each work taking something from its predecessor, each work written in a separate, distinctive era. The passage of time would allow writers to be more graphic in terms of aftermath, as readers became more sophisticated and less disturbed by what earlier generations would consider "horrifying".
"The Last Man" takes place in the late 21st century: a future without telephones, cars, television or computers. In fact life in the 2090s is not that different to the 1820s, apart from a few political changes (Britain is now a republic). Readers who criticized "Earth Abides" for being dated would have even more to complain about here. Shelley could not possibly have guessed the advances, social and technological, that would take place since 1824. Therefore it's helpful for the modern reader to pretend the story is happening in an alternate 21st century, along the lines of "Pavane".
The narrator Lionel Verney spends the first third of the book describing his early life, telling us how an altruistic young man of noble stock (Adrian) took him under his wing, effectively saving him from a life of penury. Lionel and his younger sister now mix in the highest circles, the cultured world of art, literature and music (things which the working class had nothing to do with in the 1820s).
Mary Shelley's prose is formal to say the least. Containing echoes of Byron and Wordsworth, it is rich, stylish and philosophical. It is not until Part two of the novel that the plague makes its appearance. When Shelley describes the plague there is mention of bodies lying in the open and the breakdown of order, but she doesn't treat it with the kind of brutal frankness that Stephen King does in "The Stand". It does look as if King was influenced by Shelley however. Here is a quote from "The Last Man":
"The ward was filled with an effuvia that caused my heart to heave with painful qualms. The dead were carried out, and the sick brought in, with like indifference; some were screaming with pain, others laughing from the influence of more terrible delerium; some were attended by weeping, despairing relations, others called aloud with thrilling tenderness or reproach on the friends who had deserted them while the nurses went from bed to bed incarnate images of despair, neglect and death."
Here is a quote from "The Stand" one and a half centuries later:
"Wards were crammed. Patients lay on the floors. The halls were full; nurses, many of them obviously sick themselves, wove in and out, some of them weeping hysterically. Others looked shocked to the point of coma." King also adds little details like the smell of waste and the cries of the damned. While Shelley is poetic, King is direct and to the point. He was writing for an audience whose attention span has been diminished by things like television and films laden with special effects. The impatient 21st century reader may therefore find "The Last Man" more of a challenge.
Although Shelley's plague is more gradual than those of other writers, society is still crumbling. Even though extinction is in the air, the main characters still perform acts of heroism. The character Adrian has all the makings of a saint. It's just unfortunate that there will be no one left alive to canonize him. Although "The Last Man" is dated, it did pave the way for a genre that still fascinates and terrifies readers today. Mary Shelley is owed a great debt in terms of apocalyptic literature.

"The Last Man," the best of Mary Shelley's "other" works
By Lawrance Bernabo
Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley published "The Last Man" in 1826, eight years after her classic "Frankenstein" and four years after her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley died. Of all of her other novels, "The Last Man" is clearly the one that is of more than passing interest. In her Journal in May of 1824 Shelley wrote: "The last man! Yes, I may well describe that solitary being's feelings, feeling myself as the last relic of a beloved race, my companions extinct before me." The result was one of the first novels to tell a story in which the human race is destroyed by pestilence, which we have seen in novels from Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" and Stephen King's "The Stand," and films such as the recent "28 Days Later..." However, "The Last Man" is also an early example of a dystopian novel set in the 21st century when England is a republic being governed by a ruling elite. Adrian, Earl of Windsor (and a representation of Shelley's late husband) introduces the narrator of the tale, Lionel Verney, who is the required outsider to describe and comment upon the world of the future.
Shelley's vision of the future is essentially a reaction against Romanticism and the failure of the movement to solve the problems of the world with art and imagination. This would stand in contrast to earlier English utopian works such as Francis Bacon's "The New Atlantis," which reflected the Age of Reason's belief that science would solve any and all problems. Shelley begins the story as a romance, with Lord Raymond (presumed to be modeled on Lord Byron) winning the hand of the lovely Perdita and being elected Protector. In contrast to the dire predictions of Thomas Malthus regarding unchecked population growth resulting in mass starvation, an ideal world seems to have been created. But then the plague breaks out in Constantinople and starts spreading. This plague is grounded more in fantasy than science, with Shelley clearly relying more on Boccaccio and Defoe, for her pandemic, which is not contagious (an interesting plot choice to be sure).
The point of the plague is that it allows Shelley to show the best and the worst of human nature. When the demagogue Ryland abdicates being Lord Protector, the altruistic Adrian takes his place and makes an appeal for brotherhood, even as anarchy runs rampant in the streets and eventually the main characters are forced to flee England, which has strong parallels to the expulsion from Eden. This sets up the idea at the end of the novel that the last survivors might be able to establish an earthly paradise and rebuild the human race after the plague has disappeared. I was rather surprised that Shelley kills off her female characters because I had expectations that this would be more of a feminist work. Of course, this is because I remember who her mother was, but "The Last Man" is clearly concerned more with her late husband.
"The Last Man" was probably Mary Shelley's least successful work during her lifetime, but today, which the interest in science fiction, as well as the real world threats of biological warfare and other weapons of mass destruction, this idea of how the world ends is quite pertinent. This is clearly her most important work after "Frankenstein," although obviously we are talking about a significant gap.

Cute Way to Celebrate the Chinese Zodiac
By Amazon Customer
This book automatically gets a +1 rating in my book for my son who was actually born in the year of the dragon. For parents trying to incorporate a little Chinese culture in their toddler, this is an extremely cute book. True to Joyce Wan's style, it features bright cute illustrations accompanied with a cute little saying. At the end of the book is a mirror that my 21 month old toddler loves. He always gets excited when he sees his face and unlike some "mirrors" in other toddler/baby books, the mirror in this book is really high quality and gives very little distortion. My only wish is that the illustrations has texture like the cover. My son touches the cover and feels the fun texture and keeps trying to feel the inside pages and is disappointed when he doesn't feel anything.

Really cute book with awesome illustrations!
By Lizzie
My son and I love Joyce Wan's books, and this is definitely in her top 4. The only thing I don't like as much about this one is that instead of mimicking the format of her other books-- where each "page" is a 2-page spread-- this book has a different animal (lucky dragon, clever snake, playful puppy, etc.) on every SINGLE page. It means you get a lot more content, but I think it ends up being too much, especially for little ones who just want to enjoy the pictures. I think this could have easily been two books, and I would have liked that better. Other than that, I love it!

Adorable!
By Kristen Burger
These books are adorable! I have the Lucky Little Dragon and the Cupcake versions. My son is 2 and I purchased a variety of books to fill up his shelf, as he is just getting interested in looking at books. There is no story line to this; it's just cute little phrases that a parent (or grandparent, etc) would say to a child. But the illustrations are too cute and really colorful. My little boy loves looking at them. The covers do seem kind of flimsy for a board book though; the front of mine was slightly bent just from shipping, but I would still recommend them to anyone looking for a cute addition to a toddler library.

Incredible collection that could of had a little more
By That Dude
When I found out 2 of my favorites were mashing up, I couldn't of been more excited. This collection is great to have, but it could of included a little more. There are two things I wish they would of added:

-Album and artist that inspired the cover: I'm a big fan of hip-hop; been a fan since 1995. I can probably name more than 3/4 of the artists that they cover in this collection, but I really wish the publishers added the info here.

-Artists' View: This is just an addition I would of personally enjoyed. It would of been cool to read details from an artist (pencils, inker, colors) regarding the making of this cover. What the process was on making it and their thoughts on the album and/or artist(s) IF they are fans. Another great addition would of been if they could of got the rappers' thoughts on the final cover.

Those are the only minor things I wish they would of added. I like how they included the sketches and inks for covers. If I knew Marvel was gonna release these in a collection, I wouldn't even of bought the individuals. I ended up buying 18 of these covers and spending close to a bill ($100) on them. Put it this way: I bought this collection for less money than it cost me when I bought 2, TWO of these individual issues. Plus variant covers don't sell for cover price, so finding a decent place that didn't charge a lot more was a pain. On top of that was not knowing if the place would have them when I got there.

With that being said, I am grateful they released this. I can't wait for volume 2. Thank you, Marvel.

From Publishers Weekly
Personal trainer Hahn and his physician co-writers, who previously authored the bestselling Protein Power, purport to have discovered the secret to strengthening heart and bones, enhancing flexibility, burning fat and improving athletic performance. This "revolutionary method of strength training that far exceeds the benefits of almost any other kind of exercise" is the Slow Burn-a "tough but short" workout consisting of measured lifting of heavy weights to the point of complete muscle exhaustion. For those with access to gym equipment, the weight should be "so heavy that for the first second or two you feel like you won't be able to budge it" (readers sans gym memberships work with their body weight and a few small free weights). Before describing any Slow Burn exercises, however, the authors spend 70-odd pages trying to debunk most common assumptions regarding exercise and diet. Not all exercise is beneficial, they argue, and some exercise can be downright harmful (jogging, the authors insist, causes, "bad knees, damaged hips, and weak backs"). Similarly, the old dictate "eat less, exercise more" is not the simple weight loss solution it seems, and the book provides all sorts of evidence to explain why (the pages are liberally sprinkled with footnotes and scientific terminology). This book seems more like a good argument for strength training than it does a full-blown revolution, but the exercises are easy to follow and should improve fitness when practiced appropriately.

Review
“I've always enjoyed sports and athletic activities... then "Life" happened. My back hurt, my knees creaked, and an extra 15 or so pounds mysteriously appeared. And try as I might, I couldn't find enough time to exercise it all away. Then I tried Slow Burn. Within a few workouts I realized that my back had stopped aching (and it had been aching for a long time) and my knees stopped hurting. When I played with my son, I could pick him up and roughhouse with him with greater ease. Everyday activities became much easier. And perhaps best of all, I am absolutely crushing the golf ball!! Maybe I could have accomplished this with a three-times-a-week gym routine, but this all came about with 30 minutes a week – sometimes less! I can't say enough about what Slow Burn has done to help me regain my lost strength, health, fitness, and even a little youth. You should try it too!”
--Dr. Max Gomez, New York News Channel 4 medical reporter

“As a professional singer, dancer, and actress, keeping my body strong and resistant to injury is absolutely essential. Since using Slow Burn, it feels as if I’ve turned back the clock a decade and become almost impervious to damage. It’s wonderful to feel as if I’m adding years to my life and career exercising a mere 30 minutes a week!”

Good book, good workout, but we couldn't stick with it
By Ricardo
Both my wife and I tried the Slow Burn workout for about a month and I thought I'd share our experience. We're middle age and in better shape than average. We ended up switching to another workout routine but not because Slow Burn wasn't working for us "physically". It was working, but it ended up not being a good "psychological" fit for us.

Slow Burn, the book, is good. The author lays out his case logically and makes it easy to get started. He anticipated and answered about every question we had and provided good, practical advice. The home workout described can be done with just a modest investment. As others have said, though the workout is designed to do just once a week for 30 minutes (that's what attracted us initially), if done properly it's very intense.

The book actually lays out two different routines, one for the home with basic equipment, and one for the gym with weight machines. We worked out at home. The first week, as suggested in the book, we did the workout 3 times to speed up the learning process, then switched to 1/week once we were comfortable with the routine and had figured out the appropriate weights. Having a partner really helped with the time-keeping for each exercise. The book recommends getting a metronome. We didn't have one but I think it would help, escpecially if working out alone. The 2nd and 3rd week sessions went well. We were left drained and wobbly but in a satisfied way. But then a few days after the 4th week session we admitted to each other we really weren't looking forward to the next workout, and agreed to make a change.

An intense workout just 1/week sounds good, but at least in our case we learned we prefered a lower intensity routine we do more often. Maybe it has something to do with our age. As we grow older we like a daily routine more. After getting recommendations from friends and some trial and error we settled on the Joe X routine which we do each morning now. Joe X takes more time overall than Slow Burn each week but it keeps us motivated and lifts us up instead of wearing us out. We also looked at 5-Factor Fitness and Body for Life. Though we ended up doing something else, these two programs also seem good and are worth considering. I guess the point I'm making is we're all different and the physical side of fitness is only part of the issue. Like a diet, the best workout routine is probably the one that you can stick with, and it may be different than the next persons.

I love this work out
By B. Gray
I'm female, 55 and was not fit, though I used to be in my 20's. After two kids and 30 lbs of slow slide into middle age I was ready to find a way out but nothing had worked much. I'd done most of the standard recommended programs. It helped some. I wasn't a couch potato but hardly what I'd consider fit.

2 years ago I ran across Slowburn Fitness and started doing it. I was SO grateful for something short, simple and effective. 2 years later I'm as strong (or perhaps stronger) than I was in my 20's. I have endurance and stamina. I also have lost 30 lbs and am down to a very good body mass figure. And ALL of this with two 15 or 20 minute sessions a week. I couldn't believe they meant it but they did.

The people who write negatively about this program say that its hard to do or it "hurts" and so people wont want to do it. I found just the opposite. I was SO glad I could do it at home, virtually for free, and not have to be at a gym (though later I've come to use gyms sometimes.) I was SO grateful that it was working they way the authors promised. And I can't believe that it really delivered what it promised, but it did.

So get it and do it! It is the least dangerous, safest and most effective program --especially for us older types for whom injury during exercise is an issue. Just be aware that you do not have to HURT to do this, just work out till your muscle fatigues. The exercises are designed to fatigue muscles fast, in only a few repetitions. If you are not used to the feelings you might consider them unpleasant but. . .just remember, its ONLY FIFTEEN MINUTES. (twice a week at that) and you get as much fitness or more than if you were spending hours doing other programs.

For me that is exactly what I needed.

Very good workout, decent book
By Todd
So, as people have noted, slow lifting has been around for a while, but this book, along with Power of 10, is really trying to bring it more into the mainstream.
The book is split into two parts: The "Why" and the "How". The first part, the "Why" section, explains why the Slow Burn workout is good for you. The benefits they describe aren't exclusive to slow lifting; they can apply to any sort of strength training. And whiel some of the benefits they describe are pretty well known to people who weight-lift, it's good to remind all those people packed into the 5:00 Spinning class that strength training isn't just for massive guys in spandex with no body hair.
The book also made some pretty surprising (or outrageous) claims -- for example, that an aerobic exercise like running barely improves your heart at all; it just makes your leg muscles more efficient for future runs. Or that lots of stretching does you more harm in the long-run than good. (Come to think of it, I do know lots of dancers with dislocated joints.) And I would tend to believe them, except for the fact that the tone of this whole section totally turned me off. Frankly, it sounded less and less like an exercise book and more like an infomercial. Hey, guys, if your facts are persuasive enough (and they seem to be), I should be able to figure out on my own that the Slow Burn program is good without you screaming at me to "Join the Slow Burn Revolution!" every third paragraph. Enough with the hard sell!
Anyway, the second half of the book, the "How" section, describes several Slow Burn exercises to perform. And they include two sets of exercises: one you can do at home without much equipment, and one you can do at the gym with machines. I focused mostly on the second section, and found the descriptions to be pretty helpful. They include photos of each exercise at the "start" and "end" stage, along with a list of pointers to remember.
I do have some complaints with this section, though. They give you several odd rules to follow -- for example, to do exercises in exactly the order they describe, to spend the first three seconds lifting the first inch and the remaining seven seconds lifting the rest of the way, or to only spend a minute resting between exercises -- without really telling you why any of that is important. That kind of information would have really been helpful. Especially, say, if I needed to improvise or change my routine in any way.
But anyway, all of this is well and good, but it doesn't really matter unless the program works, and so far, it's been working really well. I've been doing a slow lift routine, once a week, for about a month now, and there's a noticeable improvement in my physique. I've definitely gained muscle in my chest and back, and my abs are regaining some definition, too. I also feel great the day after. I'm sore in a "I worked out pretty hard" way, not a "Jeez, I think I tore a tendon" way. Could I have gotten the same results if I had worked out with an old "25 minutes of cardio, 45 minutes of lifting three-to-five times a week" routine? Probably. But, unlike the 3-5 times a week routine, this one I can actually do and still have a life outside the gym.
"Okay," you're thinking, "There's gotta be a catch." Right? Well there is, kind of. The catch is this: This workout saves you _time_, not _effort_. Sure, it's only a 30 minute workout per week, but it's not the same 30 minutes you spend on the stairmaster. This is the most intense 30 minute workout you'll ever have, and it requires some willpower and discipline to see it through. The whole point of the technique is to bring your muscles to failure as soon as possible, and you can't do that if you quit because it's starting to get hard or you don't feel like working. So ask yourself this: Are you not going to the gym because you have other things you'd rather do with your time, or are you just lazy? 'Cuz if it's the latter, there's no exercise book out there that'll help you.
Oh, and I'm not quite sure why so many reviews around here are focused on the diet. The section on diet is this tiny little 5-page appendix at the end, and it's a pretty moderate, "Try eating more protien and fewer carbs" approach than anything crazy. Personally, I haven't really changeed my diet at all.

Rye is anxious to leave the house so he doesn't arouse Emma's curiosity, but when he witnesses one of Mark's calls, he can't leave her, knowing how scared she is. Rye stays in town for a few days to make sure nothing happens to her, and Emma welcomes his company, if only she could keep her hands off him. Hill's romance makes for good steamy entertainment. I loved this novel
By CJW
I loved this novel! This was the first Teresa Hill novel I had read. I have reread it several times. I finally decided to write a review after reading the highly critical reviews of the McRae series. The romance is touching, the plot well thought out and the main characters well developed. Yes, there is sex and there should be because that is part of the attraction between the characters. Ms. Hills intimate scenes are very tasteful and well written and they flow seamlessly with the storyline. So, I hope the sex scenes stay were they are appropriate and those who like romance novels without them seem doomed to forever view sex as something negative, outside of loving relationships and not fit for stories that involve family and faith when that is exactly where it belongs.

Beautiful, a keeper
By AmazonCustomer
This book is what I look for in an older man/younger woman romance, but it has so much more than only that theme or that taboo. It is just a wonderfully written and touching romance, in every way. I just now finished it, crying a little and really feeling as if I've been put through every emotion, from sadness to joy, from frustration to hope. I loved it. I devoured this book, every beautiful, poignant moment in it.

You may already suspect who Rye will turn out to be. His relationship to Emma's adopted family is where the taboo aspect and some of the conflict of the story come in. ** Spoiler, but the reader does learn this early on --- Rye is Sam's long-lost brother, and Sam is Emma's adoptive father.---*** And on top of that tension, Rye is 33 years old and Emma 18 when they first meet.

Now for some people, the age of the heroine may be a deal breaker, but please, don't let that put you off. It is so not seedy or dirty or wrong. It's really quite touching the love she feels for this older man. Given her past, Emma is an old soul, and on so many levels, she sees and understands all the deep, lonely, and sad places in Rye. For Rye, who has a shameful and painful past, Emma is everything good and innocent and right in the world. He desperately wants her but feels so unworthy of her.

If ever a man was in need of redemptive love, Rye is that man. I loved him. He is that hero you fall in love with. You can totally see how Emma would lose her heart to him. He is the protector, he is that lost, injured soul, and he is that hero who is strong but needy and vulnerable. If you want a hero who risks his own future for the safety of the heroine; if you want a hero who waits for the heroine, a hero who wants only her and no one else; if you want a hero who believes he's not good enough even to touch the heroine, you will love Rye.

After waiting over two years for Emma, Rye is ready to have his deepest desire and greatest longing. He's tired of wanting and loving her from afar. He knows he doesn't deserve her, but once Emma tells him her heart is his and always has been, he can't deny himself any longer. Rye tells Sam, "There may be a better man than I am out there somewhere for her. But there's no one who's ever going to love her as much as I do... She's it for me. The only woman I will ever love."

I love when a hero longs for love, desperately wanting it with everything in him. And when he gets it, he cherishes it and will never let it go. What a damn fine hero; Rye's it for me. And what a romance, a true romance. It is touching, sexy, and deep in story and character. It's bittersweet, full of longing and emotion, and just plain romantic.

Finding paradise : island art in private collections, Honolulu Academy of Arts, by Don R. Severson

Spanning the period from pre-Western contact to statehood, Finding Paradise examines in text and images the art, the culture (both high and low), and the mystique of the Hawaiian Islands. A lavishly illustrated book that includes over 500 color photographs, Finding Paradise features extensive coverage of paintings and painters, prints and printmakers, and a valuable discussion of "The Hawai'i One Hundred," a list comprised of one hundred essential books printed before the end of the nineteenth century. There are also essays on surfing, the 'ukulele, the promotion of Hawai'i as an island "paradise," and the development of the Hawaiian quiltmaking tradition, as well as sculpture and the decorative arts (ceramics, furniture, and jewelry).

Comprehensive and in-depth, but check out Marple too
By A Customer
Very good coverage of current topics. It provides
a good theoretical basis, with coded examples (points deducted because he uses FORTRAN *ick*)

For coursework, Kay provides more depth. For
people who just want to get an algorithm working, Marple has "the high points" at the beginning of
each chapter.

Pretty good in general but check out Stoica as well.
By A Customer
Kay explains the somewhat difficult concepts of spectral estimation in a simple straight forward manner. I especially liked his explanation of the Levinson algorithm. Not too much emphasis on matrix notation and seeing things from a linear algebra standpoint. Stoica is pretty good at this.

Fighting for Air: The Battle to Control America's Media, by Eric Klinenberg

A groundbreaking investigative work by a critically acclaimed sociologist on the corporate takeover of local news and what it means for all Americans

For the residents of Minot, North Dakota, Clear Channel Communications is synonymous with disaster. Early in the morning of January 18, 2002, a train derailment sent a cloud of poisonous gas drifting toward the small town. Minot's fire and rescue departments attempted to reach Clear Channel, which owned and operated all six local commercial radio stations, to warn residents of the approaching threat. But in the age of canned programming and virtual DJs, there was no one in the conglomerate's studio to take the call. The people of Minot were taken unawares. The result: one death and more than a thousand injuries.

Opening with the story of the Minot tragedy, Eric Klinenberg's Fighting for Air takes us into the world of preprogrammed radio shows, empty television news stations, and copycat newspapers to show how corporate ownership and control of local media has remade American political and cultural life. Klinenberg argues that the demise of truly local media stems from the federal government's malign neglect, as the agencies charged with ensuring diversity and open competition have ceded control to the very conglomerates that consistently undermine these values and goals.

Such "big media" may not be here to stay, however. Fighting for Air delivers a call to action, revealing a rising generation of new media activists and citizen journalists—a coalition of liberals and conservatives—who are demanding and even creating the local coverage they need and deserve.

Review
"Eric Klinenberg has written an extraordinary and powerful account of the devastating elimination of localism in U.S. media and journalism, and how Americans from all walks of life are rising up to challenge the great media crisis that grips our nation today. Brilliantly written and tightly argued, Fighting for Air is the perfect book for anyone wanting to understand what is going on in this country, and why it is so important to our future."--Robert W. McChesney, author of The Problem of the Media "Eric Klinenberg has given us a chilling report on how the American news media, increasingly concentrated, have made a mockery of the commitment to operate 'in the public interest, convenience, and necessity.' Admirably researched and lucidly written, Fighting for Air should serve as a wake-up call on the deafness of radio and television to communal needs." --Daniel Schorr, Senior News Analyst for National Public Radio "Big media conglomerates--in radio, TV and newspapers--have taken over local outlets all over America, silencing independent local voices. Eric Klinenberg has done a masterful job of researching what has happened to America's local news media. Fighting for Air is a must-read for anyone who cares about the role of the media in a democracy."--George Lakoff, author of Don't Think of an Elephant! "Fighting for Air is a richly detailed, compelling, and timely investigation into the problem of the U.S. media and what people are doing to take it back.  Klinenberg pulls back the curtain on complex media policy issues, with stories of real people, how they have been harmed by Big Media, and follows up with inspiring tales of underdogs who are fighting back and winning.  This book is a call to action to fight for a strong, vigorous, independent media."--Amy Goodman, host and executive producer of Democ...

Introduction
At approximately 1:39 a.m. on January 18, 2002, a 112-car Canadian Pacific Railway train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed just outside Minot, North Dakota, the fourth largest city in the state. According to the operating crew, the train had been traveling at forty miles an hour, and the accident happened when they attempted to slowdown after hitting a rough spot on the tracks. Thirty-one cars jumped off the rails, and several burst open, spilling about 240,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia, a toxic compound commonly used as a fertilizer, into a woodsy neighborhood called Tierrecita Vallejo, “Lovely Land of the Valley.”
Minot, a quiet town with a population of nearly thirty-seven thousand nestled into a low-lying valley below the Canadian border, developed with the expansion of the rail lines and is now known for its air force base and annual state fair. In winter, arctic air grips the region, freezing winds howl through the streets, and residents hunker down. On the morning of the accident the winds were unusually gentle, and instead of dispersing, the anhydrous ammonia quickly formed a vapor plume that covered the crash site, spread to the adjacent residential area, and floated ominously toward town. Once they realized what was happening, the train crew unhitched their two locomotives and hurried into Minot. The conductor used his personal cell phone to call Ward County 911.1 OPERATOR: 9-1-1, what’s the emergency?
CALLER: Uh, uh, this Minot Dispatch?
OPERATOR: Yes, it is.
CALLER: We’ve got an emerg, just had a derailment. We’ve got an
explosion. Oh, it’s around Tierrecita, Tierrecita Val, Vallejo, uh, CP
Rail, we just had a derailment and we’ve got an explosive. Over.
OPERATOR: Okay. Uh, do you know what kind of chemicals are on
board, sir?
CALLER: Uh, we’ve got hazardous material and I can smell stuff now. Although the Ward County 911 dispatchers do not see much action in the dead of winter, they had an emergency management plan in place. After taking the conductor’s call, the operator paged the Minot Rural Fire Department, and within two minutes the chief and assistant chief responded. They sent six units from the rural fire hall to the accident site, requested mutual aid from the Minot City Fire Department and the Burlington Fire Department, and notified the Air Force Base Hazardous Materials Team. Ward County also sent officers from its Sheriff’s Department to the scene.
Local officials had to issue a public warning with information about the spill as well as instructions on how civilians could stay safe. Emergency personnel were familiar with anhydrous because local farmers use it regularly, and their advice was simple: Stay indoors, away from the spill. Cover your mouth with a wet washcloth if you have trouble breathing. Turn off your home furnace. Do not try to drive through the cloud. Anhydrous takes oxygen out of the air and is capable of shutting down car engines. In large enough doses, anhydrous shuts down the human respiratory system, too. Even limited exposure burns the eyes, the skin, and the lungs. The emergency crews feared that some civilians who smelled or saw the toxic cloud would leave their homes in hope of outrunning it, only to put themselves in harm’s way. Four minutes after the train crew first reported the crash, dispatchers received a call from two panicked parents whose child had run out into the toxic air. MALE: We’re out at, um Tierrecita Vallejo, 625 37th Street
Southwest . . . We don’t know what’s going on. Something sparks
and flew. It reeks in our background. We’re gonna try, get out of the
house.
OPERATOR: Okay, um. What
FEMALE: What is happening here?
MALE: (talking to female: What, What is it?) It’s bad. We’re gonna try
to go to the neighbors. What is it? . . . It smells really bad. I don’t
know if, uh, a train blew up or . . .
OPERATOR: Yeah, there is, there is a train derailment there.
MALE: Okay . . . Where is Kelsey at?
FEMALE: She ran.
MALE: God damn.
OPERATOR: Everybody in the room?
MALE: No, we don’t. My daugh, she sent my daughter out.
OPERATOR: Outside?
FEMALE: Oh, shit.
MALE: Yell at her.
MALE: Becky?
FEMALE: Kelsey. Come back, Kelsey, come back. Kelsey, can you come
back.
MALE: God damn it, Becky. What in the hell are you doing in the
middle of the night.
OPERATOR: Do, do you have everybody there now?
MALE: No, we don’t. My daughter isn’t there. I don’t have anything
on. They’re all dressed and she sent her out but it smells really bad
outside.
OPERATOR: Okay, yeah, just.
MALE: Is she here?
FEMALE: No, honey, she’s gone.
OPERATOR: Ma’am?
FEMALE: My daughter ran out the front door.
OPERATOR: She ran out? How old is your daughter?
FEMALE: She’s twelve . . . Is she gonna die out there?
MALE: I don’t know.
FEMALE: You guys have to hurry please . . . Two minutes later the office fielded another urgent call. OPERATOR: 9-1-1, what is your emergency?
FEMALE: Hi. There’s some emergency at our house at Tierrecita
Vallejo. I don’t know what it is but there was a huge, huge crash.
There’s smoke everywhere outside.
OPERATOR: Right. We’re aware of it. We have fire units en route,
okay? You need to stay
FEMALE: What is going on?
OPERATOR: You need to stay calm until we can figure out what, what’s
going on, what to do. Okay. Stay calm. If there’s gonna be any
evacuations, we will announce it. Okay. But you need to stay in
your house.
FEMALE: We can’t hear if you announce anything. Within minutes of the accident, calls to 911 were coming in by the dozen. Those who lived near the accident or were driving close by heard the explosions and saw fires burning. Some who were farther away smelled chemicals in the air and worried that there had been a bomb at the local military base. The toxic cloud grew to some five miles long, two and one-half miles wide, and 350 feet high, penetrating into the homes of approximately fifteen thousand people, waking up some and causing widespread fear and confusion among those who stumbled around their homes trying to assess what was happening.2 Minot residents complained that their eyes, lungs, and nasal passages were burning, and told dispatchers that they didn’t know how to protect themselves.” What should we do?” one resident asked his wife as she spoke with the operator. She repeated the question. “What should we do?”
Instead of calling 911 to find out what had happened and what they should do, most people in Minot turned on their televisions and radios, which had proven to be reliable sources of emergency public health and safety information since the Cold War, when President Harry Truman charged broadcasters with responsibility for the service. Not only were broadcast companies then uniquely positioned to conduct crisis communications on a massive scale; they also had a special duty to do so: the government required that they meet public-interest obligations in exchange for a license to use the nation’s airwaves and for regulatory enforcement that prevented other operators from sending signals over their designated frequencies. In 1951, Truman established the CONELRAD (Control of Electromagnetic Radiation) system, a federal program which when activated (by emergency tones sent through predetermined chain of stations) required all of the nation’s television channels and FM radio outlets to immediately broadcast warnings before shutting down their signals, preventing foreign enemies from taking over the spectrum during a military attack. As part of the program, selected AM stations would move to one of two designated frequencies,640 kHz or 1240 kHz (each of which was tagged with triangle-in-circle “CD Mark” on radio dials built between 1953 and1963), from which they could securely issue safety announcements. “At the first indication of enemy bombers approaching the United States,” explained a civil defense publication from the 1950s, “the CONELRAD stations, 640 and 1240, are your surest and fastest means of getting emergency information and instructions. Mark those numbers on your radio set, now!”
After the Cuban Missile Crisis, disaster planners recommended improving the technology so that local officials could activate the system during a range of public safety threats, and in 1963 they introduced the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) for warnings during natural disasters, civil emergencies, or military attacks. U.S. law required radicand television broadcasters to conduct weekly tests of their EBS systems, and most Americans who watched television or listened to the radio between 1963 and 1997 remember hearing the bracing, two-tone signal, along with a flat yet reassuring voice announcing, “This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test.”
In 1997 the federal government updated EBS with a new technology, the Emergency Alert System (EAS). According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), EAS improves crisis communications because its “digital system architecture allows broadcast stations, cable systems, participating satellite companies, and other services to send and receive emergency information quickly and automatically even if those facilities are unattended.”3 The president, state and local governments, and the National Weather Service can also use EAS to override local broadcasts, an innovation designed to protect the publicly expanding the number of authorities who can trigger an alert when disaster strikes. After the derailment, dispatchers in Minot knew to direct callers to the airwaves—speci...

A Critical Contribution to the Field
By Harold Feld
As a participant in the "media reform movement" who has witnessed and participated in the events Klinenberg describes, I found his observations accurate and his analysis penetrating. I have full review on my professional blog. To give the teaser:

Anyone who wants to understand the media reform movement should buy this book. More importantly, this is the book to give your friends and relatives so that they can understand why the media reform movement matters, and why it will succeed in transforming the media landscape despite the multi-billion dollar forces arrayed against it.

Others have written excellent books on the rise of media concentration and why it sucks rocks. What makes Fighting for Air different, and therefore a must read, is that it chronicles the history of the media reform *movement*. Certainly you will understand by the end of the book why media concentration has inspired a movement of people dedicated to stopping further consolidation and reversing the effects of our increasingly centralized and homogenized media. But this realization comes through the telling of the stories of the movement -- its people, its victories, and its set backs.

Figthing for Air is essential reading for understanding media reform
By Gregory Rose
Dr. Klinenberg has provided a valuable service to Americans in his excellent historical and sociological study of media consolidation, its implications for access, content, and justice at both the national and local levels, and the growing movement to challenge consolidation. The work is a model of scholarship for a mass audience, meticulously documenting both the secondary literature and the extensive interviews Klinenberg has conducted with numerous industry and movement figures, while losing none of the immediacy of a compelling narrative and persuasive argument. Clearly and concisely Klinenberg marshals a compelling case.

My only criticism is that a more extensive discussion of the political economy of consolidation and its wider context in the US and international economies, and a more detailed critique of the failed libertarian economic paradigm which was used to sell consolidation to policymakers would be useful. But that would be asking for a much longer and more complicated book, and one which would probably not have done as admirable a job in explaining in simple and direct terms the complexities of consolidation and its dreadful consequences of American public life.

I recommend Fighting for Air as essential reading for anyone who wants to understand this vital area of public policy.

What to do about media consolidation should be the #1 issue in the 2008 election.
By Paul Tognetti
The genie is out of the bottle. Over the past 15 years our radio and television stations, newspapers and magazines have been gobbled up by a handful of media conglomerates. Turn on the radio in just about any city in this nation and you will hear the same tired and unimaginative programming. Local content has largely been eliminated on a good many of these stations and the number of commercials has increased dramatically. In many of our largest cities media companies are allowed to operate up to 8 radio stations, 3 televisions stations, cable TV service and even the local newspaper. It is an alarming state of affairs to say the least! In his new book "Fighting For Air: The Battle To Control America's Media" author Eric Klinenberg brings these critical issues to our attention. While the American public has been asleep at the switch our President, the Congress and those who are supposed to regulate such matters have allowed companies like Clear Channel, Entercom, Citadel and Infinity to gobble up our local media. If you have grown tired of all of the canned programming and recognize the importance that local media outlets have played throughout American history then this is a book you should definitely consider.

So how did this happen? Over the past two decades our government has been "deregulating" media. At one time, no company was allowed to own more than one television station in a community. The number of radio stations were also strictly regulated. And the FCC would never have allowed a company that owned a major daily newspaper to own a television station in the same town. All of this began to change in the 1980's as broadcasters cried poverty and declared that they were having a difficult time turning a profit. There was some truth to this claim, particularly for small to medium size AM radio stations. Broadcasters petitioned to have ownership restrictions relaxed and as you will see the deregulation of our media began in earnest in the late 80's. Perhaps the most dramatic and controversial measure was the Telecommunications Act of 1996. In one fell swoop Congress and the FCC eliminated the national station ownership limit altogether and raised local limits from four to as many as eight radio stations in some communities. As a result of this legislation, Clear Channel now controls more than 1200 local radio stations in the United States. A funny thing happened as local radio and television stations were gobbled up by the media giants...local programming began to disappear. The change is most noticable on the radio where thousands of local hosts have been let go. Talk shows that used to focus on local issues have been replaced by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly. And that guy giving you the weather on your local TV station may be based in a city hundreds or maybe even thousands of miles from your town.

Eric Klinenberg does an outstanding job of framing these issues for his readers. There is so much at stake here. It matters not your political persuasion. Each and every one of us has lost something precious. It is high time that the American people began to fight back! "Fighting For Air: The Battle To Control America's Media" is a great way to educate yourself about these extremely important issues. But we face an uphill fight. For obvious reasons you will never hear or see these issues discussed and debated on the major networks nor will you see them written about in the major newspapers in this country. Once you understand this, you will then begin to realize why so many Americans are convinced that the short-sighted and irresponsible consolidation of the media should rank as the top issue in the upcoming election. We must demand accountability from our elected officials. This is a comprehensive and well written book and one that I can highly recommend!
