A one-of-a-kind masterpiece

The world of Ferdydurke seems at first to be concocted out of equal parts of Kafka and Swift. There is the absurdity of Kakfa: events occur for no apparent reason, and the main character seems to be under some mysterious hypnotic spell. And there is the savage humor of Swift. Violent conflict erupts between the followers of two opposed and equally absurd and ridiculous systems of belief. But as the book progresses, it becomes clear that Gombrowicz has put his own special stamp on this world, and created a type of fiction that is totally unique.

The plot line is simple: a man of about 30 years of age is abducted by a priggish professor and finds himself, for reasons unexplained, transformed into an adolescent schoolboy. The novel consists of the "adventures" of this anti-hero in the world of adolescence, which he views with both fascination and disgust, and from which he remains detached, and yet at the same time with which he becomes intensely involved. (Ferdydurke is above all else a novel of unresolved contradictions.) Although the narrator is subjected to all the humiliations of an adolescent schoolboy (patronized by adults, frustrated by hopeless desire for a girl who disdains him, etc.), he also retains an adult outlook. In fact, it may be said that he is the only character who is adult (in the psychological sense of being self-aware) and who struggles, not always with success, to remain sane. Part of the genius of the book is that the adults in it seem crazy from the narrator's perspective as a youth, and the adolescents seem crazy from the narrator's perspective as an adult. In spite of its simple plot, Ferdydurke bursts with a dazzling exuberance of incidents, contradictions, characters, and digressions. Readers who demand strict linear plot development in a novel should probably look elsewhere.

Ferdydurke can be read at many levels. It is not surprising that a novel which features conflicts between two equally absurd systems should come out of 1930s Poland, beset as it was by two powerful opposed enemies, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Ferdydurke can also be read as an exploration of the fragility of the adult ego, of the fine line between "maturity" and "immaturity". The violent schoolboy quarrels which so fascinate and repel the narrator seem like absurdist, distorted parodies of very serious adult matters. And this novel is also about hidden, dark passageways in the human psyche. The narrator confesses to thoughts and behavior that most of us would never want to allow into the daylight of consciousness, much less to own up to.

Ferdydurke is not a difficult read, but it is quite digressive and very different from what most English-speakers expect a novel to be. Until this new translation, the first directly into English, it was effectively unavailable. This book is not for everyone. But it is a fascinating read for those who are seeking a multi-faceted, complex, and uncompromising (one noted critic has called it "Nietzchean") exploration of what it means to be a "mature adult", and who are not looking for easy answers or Hollywood endings.

Linguistic archetypes and immaturity

"Ferdydurke" by Witold Gombrowicz has finally been properly translated into English. Not that this is an event worth mentioning in general, but the point to be made is that the world of translation offers room for all kinds of mischief and sloppiness. Who would have thought that it were perfectly acceptable for publishers to allow translation from a second, and not native tongue? Imagine, for purposes of illustration, that a work of a classic British author translated into German not directly, but from Suahili, for this was the language the book was first translated into. Would you be satisfied with a product of this type? This was the fate of Gombrowicz, his native tongue was done away with, and the Anglo-Saxon world of bibliophiles had had no other choice but to read a lemon. Perhaps this is the revenge of the Heavens on the author himself, for never was there any other Polish author who had his native country in such a low regard as he did. In his "Trans-Atlantyk", Gombrowicz dared to ridicule everything a Pole holds dear, together with the whole idea of a nation as such. Were he to live today, he would embrace the idea of convergence and the global village of consumptionism, as opposed to Europe of Nations. That was one of the main reasons for Gombrowicz's emigration to Argentina, where he spent almost all of his literary career.
"Ferdydurke" is an early novel by this author, and it's never as crass as the aforementioned "Trans-Atlantyk". In fact, it constitutes part of a literary canon in Poland to this very day, and there is no educated Pole who hasn't read or at least heard of "Ferdydurke". Scenes from this book, gestures, and neologisms entered the mass vocabulary, and once you learn some of these expressions, you cannot unlearn them, for then there is no better way to express yourself, but to use the phrases coined by Gombrowicz. Whatever issues Poles have with this author, one thing is certain: we are grateful to him for augmenting our language. Gombrowicz created an archetype of a confused man, whose karma is to move back in time, back to school, with the mentality of an adult. I will even risk a claim that this fact alone lies at the very heart of science fiction - for how might that be possible, and what would happen if such occurence took place? How would that affect the object in queestion? Perhaps my perception of this problem is a bit skewed due to my occupational hazard of a scientist, but for me, "Ferdydurke" is a laboratory novel, where with a literary set of tools we analyze both the situation, and the object, in the vein of the medieval alchemist. This novel, hardly known in the English-speaking world, will be an exhilarating reading experience for you, provided that you will trust me and pick it up. The amusing analysis of the immature world the protagonist found himself in, mixed with elements from all literary forms, from plain mystery, via comedy, to sophisticated analysis of society, makes Ferdydurke an experimental novel of potential interest for all bibliophiles and lovers of the nonstandard.

Zany to the point of seriousness

Ferdydurke is out of print! It has been a battle to get this book openly published in Poland, but look at how English-speaking consumers conduct their own censorship scheme. Yet there is a touch of Anglo-Saxon to the novel's madness: the upper class school boys, the title borrowed from the netherlands of H.G.Wells' corpus and much, much more. The novel questions whether there is such a thing as maturity, sending its main character back to school as an adult, where he is among boys who treat him as another boy (as does everyone else!). It also asks one of the great questions of our time: our characters are made by others; is it possible to escape this or are we merely prisoners of other people's influences? Something for us living under states who idolize individual choice to think about. But Gombrowicz's book is also full of comedy: slapstick, sharp irony, plot twists and philosophical fables. Jokes are used as an ideal way to pose serious questions. Furthermore, in its giant bums and staring contests it shows how much more you can talk about reality, including prudent insights into totalitarian life, through wild fantasy. The experiments of the novel - the unique fantasy, the invasion of the author and the symmetrical interjections - put it at the heart of European modernism. It is a landmark, albeit buttock-shaped.

Martin emphasizes not just the racism prevalent in football and basketball in the South, but the effects of this discrimination for colleges and universities all over the country. Southern teams such as the University of Alabama, University of Mississippi, and the University of North Carolina were obsessed with national recognition, but their Jim Crow policies prevented them for many years from playing against racially mixed teams from other parts of the country. Devoting special attention to the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, and teams in Texas, Martin explores the changing social attitudes and culture of competition that turned the tide and allowed for the recruitment of black players and hiring of black coaches. He takes a close look at the case of Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso), the first major white university in an ex-Confederate state to recruit African American athletes extensively. Martin skillfully weaves existing arguments and documentation on the integration of college sports with wide-ranging, original research, including previously unpublished papers and correspondence of college administrators and athletic directors uncovered in university archives.

Be a Gentleman, Be a Racist

Charles H. Martin has written a much needed explanation of how intercollegiate sports programs finally accepted black athletes as part of college games. If you like the Jackie Robinson story in the film "42", you will be enlightened by BENCHING JIM CROW. Jim Crow laws in the South prohibited blacks from "social" occasions such as dances, games and schools that mixed the races.

1. The South insisted that northern teams leave black players at home when visiting the South to play games.
2. A "good Negro" was a black player who did not complain about being dropped from a game just to suit southern racists.
3. Southern "culture" was to be respected by the North, even though that culture was full of hate and racism.
4. Northern universities were also very slow in finding places for blacks on their teams.
5. Black athletes in the South could not eat or sleep with their white teammates.
6. Blacks could not play basketball in the South because their sweat would touch white players and because more of their bodies were exposed by abbreviated uniforms.
7. Southern racists feared that black players would increase the rate of "mixed marriages."
8. Southern universities finally allowed black participation when their teams could gain more fame and fortune if they could play against good intersectional teams from the North.
9. The football bowl games earned big bucks for colleges, so these bowl games included more and more teams who had black football players.
10. Southern colleges used the term "Gentlemen's Agreement" to describe the North's willingness to drop black players off their teams when playing southern schools.
11. Boston College and the University of Virginia were especially willing to ignore racism.
12. Author Martin briefly mentions the civil rights movement and the Viet Nam protests as other influences changing the color line in sports.
13. But, mainly, money and greed by the universities' athletic departments led to the acceptance of blacks in sports.

Educational and Fun - Best Quick Read for Every College Student

I use San Bolkan's book, So You Are Going to College, for all of my college courses. It creates a great fun and fast supplemental reading that the students can relate to and it is a way for them to learn important lessons. I have had students scoff on the first day when I tell them about one more book they have to buy (& read)--but when I tell them I will buy it from them if they don't like the book they are floored...and I have yet to have to write any checks to back up my guarantee. :) Bottom line, I have assigned this book to over 500 college students, given it to family friends graduating from high school, and read it numerous times myself for class discussion. It only gets positive reviews and it always leaves the reader wanting more of San Bolkan's writing.

This book is a great way to introduce students to college, its expectations, and ways to be prepared.

There are TONS of books out there which aim to inform collegians about, "how to help themselves," or "do school the right way," but let's face it...most of those are BORING.... THIS ONE is NOT.. its quite the opposite.

Poorly written, vague book - TERRIBLE

This is the worst textbook I have ever read in my entire academic career. The textbook is vague and incomprehensible to a beginner. Her writing style is needlessly wordy and obscure, so if there is something helpful in the book, it's hard to find it. The book is poorly structured with a lot of repetition of the same rambling and unclear points that don't make anymore sense despite the repetition. WORST. BOOK. EVER.

About the Author
Adam Wade spent a number of years as both an automotive mechanic specializing in fuel injection and an automobile restorer before his riding bug pushed his career over to the world of motorcycles. In the 10 years since then, he has worked for dealerships large and small in varying capacities, has been a successful AMA Pro Racing mechanic, and worked for Emgo, Aprilia, and Factory Pro Tuning. He currently is the tech author and photographer for Dual Sport News, the tech author for Motorcycle Consumer News, and is also a successful freelance motorsports photographer. He prefers riding alone and with no particular destination to group rides. He also fights Fibromyalgia daily.

OK as an introduction, not much use otherwise.

The content is somewhat dated, so of limited use to anyone seeking detailed information. The author struggles to explain concepts in parts, suggesting that he has been less than meticulous in his research. There are better books available.

I recomend this book to anyone that loves motorcycles.

This is a book writen from a bike lover fot bike lovers.

has the old stuff and the new stuff, and explains the delicate FI details and concepts.

Fool Me Three Times...

The Avengers by Julie Kaewert based on the screenplay written by Don Macpherson (1998, 227 pages) – I never learn. When the movie came out based on my favorite childhood characters, John Steed and Emma Peel, I ran to see it and came out confused and disappointed. What had happened to my heroes?

Being the idiot I am, I rented the movie when it came out. The movie couldn’t really be as bad as I thought, right? It was worse than I remembered. Giant Grateful Dead teddy bears? The original James Bond, Sean Connery, chewing up the scenery?

You’d think I’d learn, but I picked up the book, still trying to give the retrofit another chance. Maybe the director ruined it.

Nope, the book was absolute swill.

Not only were the main characters acting very unSteed and unPeel-like, but the plot was silly (weather control) and there was way too much romance for the Avengers. The author seemed to have a good handle on Mrs. Peel, the Diana Rigg version, but Steed was such a horn-dog that I could not see Pactrick McNee in my mind as I was reading it. Through most of the book he kept being distracted by Mrs. Peel’s beautify and skintight cat suit.

One of the great things about the British television show was that they were equals who respected each other for their abilities and their skills at outwitting the bad guys. They really were a lot alike, although I always felt Diana Rigg’s Peel was more of a bodyguard and John Steed was the brave brains.

In this book, Mr. Steed worries more about his bowler and the way the sun glints off Mrs. Peel’s auburn hair (at the most ludicrous times). Every discovery they make is accidental. Everything they figure out is pretty much handed to them by the bad guys. There’s an evil Mrs. Peel clone running around trying to convince the ministry that Mrs. Peel is a threat, and somehow she’s gone from being a bohemian industrialist to being a meteorologist? Dr. Peel? What was the point of that?

Some authors who work with screenplays actually improve the story. Alan Dean Foster’s Abyss is much better than the move. Ms Kaewert adds little to the movie except the odd romance between the two main characters. Mr. Steed seems like a lovesick puppy while Dr. Peel is almost fondled by a tartan-wearing teddy bear posing as the mastermind. This was a bad movie so I guess it’s only logical that the novelization of it would be equally bad. I jut wish it hadn’t been worse.

Good For The Uninitiated, Somewhat Dubious For The Rest

The book was worth the money paid. It will stay in my library. It did grab my interest a few times. But, it in no way compares to The Age Of Arthur, by Morris, which to my mind is the definitive book yet, in this field, and those who were left disappointed by this book should seek out Morris' book! Holy Kingdom will seem a good enough book to those not so widely read as others, otherwise it doesn't add much more than a few good ideas. Though sometimes interesting there wasn't anything "explosive" about the book. The suggested locations of Arthur's grave and Camelot, though argued well, still didn't provide anything irrefutable. I found their theories about the plagues and comet tails interesting, but old, by the time I read it. This book, unlike Morris', follows the growing trend of one individual and a few others, conversing, putting forth hypothesis' and exploring probabilities amongst themselves, and putting such things to paper. It is `conversational' in that, this is the kinds of things pseudo-intellectuals talk about around the fireplace, smoking their pipes. It is not an academic work, by any means, for an academic, bound by scholarly-essay conventions could have done in 100 pages what they do in 400+. Much of their text, extraneous, would have been excised, or reduced to a series of end-notes. This should have been as short as King Arthur: The True Story by Philips and Keatman. If you've read a dozen books on this topic, skip Holy Kingdom. If you're just starting to explore this field and haven't read much, this is as good an introduction - with its negatives and positives - as any. As a philosophic travelogue, I would give it five stars. As a piece of scholarship, I would give it two stars. Lets just call it three stars average.

Mind boggling!

What a book. I mean where have Wilson and Blackett been all my life? Their book is excellent with cogent argument, the power of years of on-site research and clear identification of source material.
Forget Morris, Ashe and Alcock. The latter had to admit that all the sites around the supposed "camelot", Cadbury Hill, Somerset, were forged in the 1500s by John Leland. A casual glance at Wilson and Blackett's chapter on "The Glastonbury Hoax" plus some research of my onw indicated that the "Glastennen" referred to in ancient Manuscripts dated to circa 250 AD. The fake tourist and music festival site of Glastonbury, Somerset, was founded in 941, so it can't be the same place!
Wilson and Blackett are really onto something and this book is but the tip of their particular iceberg. No wonder David Ford, Robert Vermaat and friends are panicked. Take away the Avalon and "mystical Arthur" material so favoured by the dreamers and you get to the truth.
That truth, about the real Arthurian Dynasty of the ancient Britons, warts n all, is for all to read. I do hope people will get their copy soon, to avoid disappointment!

A great book on ancient British history

I really enjoyed reading The Holy Kingdom and although I'd be interested to read more about Prince Madoc in America this book acts as a great introduction to the work of Alan Wilson and Baram Blackett's Ancient British Historical Project.
I am heartened that the Holy Kingdom is now available in the USA; this project is of immense significance and if we are to flesh out the history of Madoc and Arthur in America in the sixth Century then we need to know where we're coming from...
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It does indeed seem as if Adrian Gilbert caught on to Wilson and Blackett rather late and had an editorial role, whereas they have done all the meaningful research.
Let's hope this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship between the publishers and these British historians. Rich in detail, racy in its commentary and sober in its reflection, The Holy Kingdom takes you to the sites of every relevant King Arthur story and even provides a twist in the tale in its debunking of the current Glastonbury hoax...
This is a great book, in so many ways...
