Win32 Programming, by Brent E. Rector and John M. Newcomer is a massive, 1,500-page guide to Win32 C programming, something of a lost art these days. Although even the authors admit they use C++ and MFC in their own work, this text, as a one volume document of the powerful Win32 API programming, is truly comprehensive and can replace any number of texts on a programmer's bookshelf. Win32 Programming examines the basics of programming in Windows: from a minimal skeleton program to aspects of the Win32 API, from graphics, menus, user interface components (including the Windows 95 common controls) to more advanced topics like memory management, multithreaded programming, and synchronization objects. (These last topics are useful in that system programmers--or those who write device drivers--may need access to the C API directly.) In addition to presenting reference material (including all the API calls themselves), the authors explain the ideas of how to program in a clearly written style. Though some of the material feels dated (from 16-bit Windows 3.x programming), by and large, the authors do a good job of updating this to Windows 95 and Windows NT. Sections and tips that apply only to one API or operating system are clearly marked. The CD-ROM also includes over 140,000 lines of source code to experiment with, truly a historical treasure trove for the Win32 C programmer. Developers who need to use C calls, or prefer to have printed documentation instead of online help in their compiler, should consider making space on the bookshelf for this enormous title.

Brent E. Rector is President of Wise Owl Consulting, Inc., a firm that specializes in Windows/COM development and consulting. He also teaches classes on COM, ATL, and MTS for DevelopMentor, a leading COM education firm. He received the Microsoft Annual MVP (Most Valuable Professional) award for his contributions to CompuServe's Windows forums.

Joseph M. Newcomer is head of The Joseph M. Newcomer Company, where he specializes in Windows application design, device drivers, and real-time and embedded systems. He has considerable experience in compiler and operating system design and implementation. A frequent contributor to Dr. Dobb's Journal, he has also written several books, including Win32 Programming (with Brent Rector, Addison-Wesley). In addition to his consulting practice, he serves as adjunct senior scientist at Carnegie Mellon University and has been an active contributor to CompuServe and Internet Windows online forums. Dr. Newcomer is one of the principal authors of IDL: The Language and Its Implementation, and is co-inventor on several patents on distributed information technology. Good, but needs editting

Very good on the level of detail, and incredible on the pitfalls and specific problems they found when actually writing the code for the examples. Be careful, though - a number of the tables (and even some of the printed code samples) contain typos and other minor errors (like missing headings, making one table pretty useless!). You can figure out what's wrong, but if you just use this as a reference and happen to hit a section with an error you might not catch it without reading the accompanying text. I read it through, rather than as a reference, and it was clear which parts of the text had only been lightly checked for the latest edition.
Again, 95+% of this book is really great! And the anecdotes and clear detail on where MS documentation is "flawed" are of terrific value - I definitely am glad to have purchased it, but I also want to point out that if something in it doesn't make sense - you're probably not crazy. It's quite likely to be a typo...
Oh - one more thing. The "Explorer" samples they include were a fabulous idea, and have really helped me figure out what the heck some of the various style (and other) flags really meant. Extra credit for the CD! :-)

The book is truly excellent and unparalleled in detail

I have owned this book for at least seven years and have made a couple of good attempts to read/study it with some success as it may not be the best first book for programming the Win32 API although it certainly treats the subject in excruciating detail and with insights garnered by the two authors who are two of the most consummately professional programmers in the world - Brent Rector and Joseph Newcomer. For example Herb Schildt's Programming Windows 98 from the Ground Up teaches WIN32 programming and I find myself more productive in less time studying that book, even though WIN32 programming teaches with a philosophy that one is (ultimately) going to be writing large multifile programs, and this philosophy isn't apparent in Schildt's book. Additionally, an added bonus of Win32 Programming are the insights one gets into writing more robust and professional code - the C code (and there is a lot of it - 140,000 lines included on the CD ROM) has been written by the very best programmers. Additionally, the treatment of each topic is probably more in depth in this book - one example being the discussion of the GDI. More advanced topics included are chapters on writing a DLL, writing an MDI application, and writing multithreading applications. Finally, at 1500 pages the book is reference-like and also like a textbook thus I would assume that it may well take the better part of a year to study each chapter and the associated applications, making it one of the finest and most comprehensive books ever written on WIN32 API programming. I paid $50 for it at UCLA and the book has stood the test of time and proves to be an invaluable work well worth the cost. Finally, this book would seemingly rank among the most professional and scientific computer science/programming titles ever written - certainly it would be one of the most massive - the index is around 200 pages long in itself!

A definitve and exhaustive reference and learning source

Anyone who currently programs in the Win32 environment or wants to learn how to do so needs this book. It exhaustively details the thousands of widgets (i.e. functions, manifest constants, structures, etc) that make up Win32, and provides detailed intellegent discussions of the concepts behind those widgets. These discussions are conducted in excellent English. The examples are mostly in 'C' with some 'C++'.
As a consequence this book is not for beginners. You must have a firm grasp of 'C' in order to follow the thread of the model program which is developed in the book. Since this is some of the most difficult programming imaginable, it is not a good place to start learning 'C'.
Some of the conceptual discussions are outstanding. I particularly liked the section on coordinate transformations. I had orginally consulted Windows "Help" and Petzold trying to get a handle on this elusive and difficult subject. I found that the explanation in this book was by far the most accessable and exhaustive.
The index is particularly well arranged and useful, and add immeasurably to the utility of the book.
This book is unique in its structure, in that it serves as both a reference and a teaching guide simultaneously. If one merely needs to refresh the memory or one encounters a new concept that need elaboration, this book will almost certainly fill the bill in the most efficient way possible.
I will use this book for many years to come, and wish that I had known about it earlier as it would have saved me an enormous amount of labor.
It is one of those rare computer books that is written for the ages, rather than the current release of the software.

About the Author
Dr. Sirois is the Program Director of Veterinary Technology at Penn Foster College. She received her AAS degree in veterinary technology from Camden County College and also holds a BS and an MS in Biology and an Ed.D in instructional technology and distance education. She is certified as both a veterinary technician & laboratory animal technician and has over 20 years experience as a veterinary technician educator in both traditional and distance education programs. This book is terrible. Actually

This book is terrible. Actually, every veterinary technology book published by Elsevier that I have read has been full of misinformation or repetitive and unnecessary information. The workbook that comes with this book is equally terrible. It asks for information found nowhere in the book, leaving me to Google search the information. And oh god, the fill in the blank bull crap. That's the worst part of the workbook.

Here's one excerpt from this book: "A gerbil can be safely picked up by cupping both hands under it or by grasping the base of the tail to lift it from its cage." WRONG. You NEVER lift a gerbil by its tail. Ever. It says you can draw blood from the central ear artery in a rabbit. No, you can't draw blood from any artery unless you need an arterial sample. There's a big difference and the risk for hematoma and other harmful situations by drawing blood from any artery is greater than getting blood from a vein. There are several other passages that I've found, but I'm not about to go through this entire book again to write it on here. I'm just tired of these text books by Elsevier. The editing is terrible and the information is wrong a lot of the time. The layout is fine. It's much better than some of the other crappy books that my school has assigned. One star because I believe any textbook should have accurate and up-to-date information and should be properly edited .

 In 1977 the Mathematics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, instituted a written examination as one of the first major requirements toward the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. Its purpose was to determine whether first-year students in the Ph.D. program had successfully mastered basic mathematics in order to continue in the program with the likelihood of success. Since its inception, the exam has become a major hurdle to overcome in the pursuit of the degree. The purpose of this book is to publicize the material and aid in the preparation for the examination during the undergraduate years. The book is a compilation of over 1,250 problems which have appeared on the preliminary exams in Berkeley over the last twenty-five years. It is an invaluable source of problems and solutions for every mathematics student who plans to enter a Ph.D. program. Students who work through this book will develop problem-solving skills in areas such as real analysis, multivariable calculus, differential equations, metric spaces, complex analysis, algebra, and linear algebra. The problems are organized by subject and ordered in an increasing level of difficulty. Tags with the exact exam year provide the opportunity to rehearse complete examinations. The appendix includes instructions on accessing electronic versions of the exams as well as a syllabus and statistics of passing scores.

A real pearl!

This book is a rare peak inside one of the best Ph.D. programs in Mathematics in the world. It allows you to try out and test yourself on the same problems that the best young and aspiring mathematicians are testing themselves.
The problems are neatly arranged by subject and in increasing level of difficulty, and the solutions, are not only beautifully
written, but somewhat surprising and unexpected for a seasoned student. I pull mine out of the shelf on the rainy days and try a few more, and when I get one, I really savour it!

Excellent Problem Book

The problems in this book are excellent, they are both entertaining and instructive. I thought I knew calculus, linear algebra, and all of the other typical undergraduate subjects very well, until I purchased this book. After working several problems, mostly without success, I realized that there is a big difference between knowing theorems and knowing how to use them. Since then I have worked these problems daily to improve my "working knowledge," and it has made me a much better mathematician. Learning the definitions and theorems is just the first stage of mathematical knowledge. In this form your knowledge is simply something stored in memory. In the second stage, you must turn it into something more like "software," something that is an active part of your thinking. The only way to do this is by solving problems, and for undergraduate mathematics, this is probably the best book of problems you will find. Highly recommended.

Excellent Problems!

These are great problems for those who would like to review undergraduate mathematics or those who would like to try some challenging problems. They are not as difficult as the problems on the Putnam competitions or those in the Math Monthly , but many require a bit of thought and some ingenuity. Some of the problems are routine, and if you don't want to review the basics, you can skip those and just try the more difficult ones. Even experienced problem solvers will have fun with some of these! Anyone who teaches undergraduate mathematics should have this collection. Highly recommended.

Obsessive Compulsive NFL Fan's Dream

A must for traditional statistic fanatics. Being an obsessive compulsive NFL fan, this is an annual "must have" for the sports library.

The previous year's offensive and some defensive statistics are provided by team and conference/league. Postseason games are briefly summarized. Unfortunately, regular season game summaries and statistics were abandoned several years ago. Yearly milestone leaders are provided such as 1,000 yard rushers and receivers, which is an enjoyable historical perspective. All time team vs team scores, along with all postseason game scores and standings are also provided.

The book is replete with NFL records. Upcoming individual and team milestones are also outlined.

This is a fine reference book that any NFL fan would find very interesting

This is a great record book

This is a great record book, I had the 2006 edition and thought it would be a good time to get updated, especially when the quarterback of my favorite team is on the cover. Love the season and head to head history this book features. and of course all the individual records are included. This is also a great argument settler.

this coloring book is absolutely amazing. at first i was weary to order it because, well, its a coloring book and i am no longer a child. but i was thinking about a 15 hour flight that i would have to take and it seemed like a good source of time-wasting yet enjoyable material.
WOAH.
as soon as i opened this book i knew that this was not anything like any other coloring book i had seen! i was able to color in each and every factor of each and every detail or pattern so intricately, it was amazing. i spent two and a half hours on one page and didnt even finish it!! it was so relaxing, the time flew by so quickly!
i highly recommend this book for anyone looking for some zen "me time", for anyone wanting to waste time, and for anyone who has alot of patience. it takes a long time, but its totally worth the effort.

*the only negative was that the outline of the pictures were slightly fuzzy and that markers can leak through the other page (but this can be avoided if you put paper in between).

I love this book. It's essentially a book of intricate doodles; some are like the cover and others are more basic with larger shapes and more white space to fill in around them. I've burned about 3 hours coloring in a very small section and plan on spending a lot more time with this book.

Belief, Unity and Love -- A How-to-Guide

The Inner Connection: A Spiritual Journey of Self-Discovery and Emotional Freedom, One Day at a Time is one part 12-steps, one part a Course in Miracles, and one part miscellaneous metaphysics (think “channeling,” for instance). The book functions as a how-to-guide for seeing the world from a new perspective: no more victims/victimizers, no more separation between humans and God, no more need to cling tight to our (often vain) attempts at control. A foundational premise of the book is that we can change our perspective (shifting from negative to positive) and change our interaction with the world.

Books of this nature can either be intriguing or go wildly off the rails into what feels like metaphysical absurdity. I have to admit, this one was intriguing. I got sober in a 12-step program, so some of the colloquialisms and pithy points-of-view on life were familiar; they worked for me, so I felt like the author and I were starting from common ground. Maybe that’s why it was relatively easy for me to follow her into completely unfamiliar spiritual terrain. Some of the aspects of the book made me raise an eyebrow; I am not sure where they fall in my system of beliefs. But the author seemed well aware that this skepticism would occur in some of her readers; she even encouraged being skeptical yet staying open to the possibility. I never felt like she was trying to sell me something. I just felt like she wanted to share a transcending peace that she has uncovered, one she believes is accessible to all.

I do wish the author had included more concrete, personal narrative examples of the way the principles in the book work in her life and in the lives of people she has encountered. There were some anecdotes in the book, but I didn’t find them particularly compelling. A strong narrative woven throughout would have made the book that much more engaging. And, while the reader will always know where the author obtained the sources she uses in the book, the way the source references are cited in the text disrupted the flow of the writing. I found myself trying to manifest footnotes about halfway through the book. (No luck on that one)

The workbook-type questions included at the end of each chapter give the reader a way to put the spiritual principles discussed into practice. I found myself thinking about some of the questions, and using some of the spiritual tools, throughout the day. I wanted to discuss this book with my partner. In fact, I may even read it again. It has a lot to offer.

Inner Connection

In The Inner Connection, the author shares her own story with addiction and her recovery. Her recovery was aided by the twelve step program, and she was greatly affected and helped by growing and strengthening her spiritual condition. She writes to show what steps and avenues helped her, and to inspire the same pursuit in spiritual growth in others going through similar circumstances. She took her own unique path, including using spiritual contacts, and has found a far deeper understanding of herself and her belief and approach to life.

I liked how the author was both offering information on what helped her on her path to recovery and becoming a stronger more spiritual person, but also remains positive and encouraging to the reader throughout the book. She freely admits that what she has done and found strength in may not work for everyone, and in her honesty and encouragement I think her message is all the more helpful and meaningful. She helps provide a wonderful frame of mind and thoughtful advice that I think all readers can use to help be more mindful and emotionally healthy.

Connect to your inner self

The Inner Connection was a very inspiring book as it follows one woman who is figuring out her “Higher Power” and how it can affect how she views herself. This book is like a self-help inspirational book that is good for anyone trying to give themselves a more positive outlook on life. If one has a more positive outlook on life then we are more likely to avoid addictive behaviors. Then if one is wrapped up in something addictive and dangerous the book gives insight on how to turn this into something productive and constructive, kind of like turning lemons into lemonade. The book could follow the “short and sweet” principle as many of the ideas expressed do not need a long explanation or description. I liked that this book came from someone who actually experienced these issues and is not a psychologist type wanting to “fix” someone. It gives the story that much more meaning to readers because they see that addiction can be overcome. I would recommend this book particularly for those struggling with any sort of addiction.
