About the Author
Elizabeth Johnston Taylor, Ph.D., R.N., has a Ph.D. in Nursing and an M.S.N. in Oncology Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as training in chaplaincy and spiritual direction. She has authored or coauthored more than fifty publications and has been awarded eight funded research projects. She lectures frequently on spirituality and health and is currently associate professor, School of Nursing, at Loma Linda University in California. She lives in San Marino, California.

This is an invaluable tool for any nurse at the bedside. I am doing research on Spiritual Interventions in Acute Care settings at my hospital and found Taylor's suggestions and insights helpful in guiding my expectations and questions for the study.

I showed it to one of the Chaplains here and they are excited to incorporate ideas expressed in the book/guide as part of improving nurses' response to spiritual distress in patients.

An excellent introduction for health care practitioners in dealing with spiritual issues common in clinical practice

This book is an excellent introduction for health care practitioners in dealing with spiritual issues common in clinical practice. Elizabeth Johnston Taylor presents the subject clearly, enhanced with quotes, cartoons and pointers towards further reading. I particularly like her exercises for readers to explore and examine their own spiritual beliefs and awarenesses, and to practice varieties of ways they can respond to patients' spiritual issues.

This book addresses the question of how to form healing verbal responses to patients' expressions of spiritual pain. Although offering healing verbal responses is a fundamental skill for health care professionals, it is not the only approach for nurturing the spirit. Being silently present, reading inspirational materials, offering prayer, and encouraging journal writing or dream analysis are examples of other approaches. (p. 5)

Thoughtful quotes help the reader consider these issues. For instance,
The compassionate man says, "I love you because I understand you." The empathizing man says, "I know how you feel." The sympathizing man says, "I feel for you." Empathy and sympathy are... devoid of healing power. They have a temporary soothing effect, but they do not heal.

I don't happen to agree with this quote, but it did give me excellent food for thought. (My own belief is that empathy is a necessary part of compassion, and that it can be very healing for people to experience empathetic listening.)

On clearing caregivers' issues, so that they can be present with the people they are helping:
Larson described these issues as "interpersonal allergies." Such allergies include the fears of: 1) our own death, 2) being hurt, 3) hurting others, and 4) being engulfed by others' problems.

While issues such as praying with patients are suggested, nowhere is there a hint of pushing the practitioners' beliefs upon the patient. On the contrary, Taylor repeatedly alerts readers maintain their neutrality and respect in dealing with patients' spiritual and religious issues.

The book comes in a version that includes a DVD with the same title, but nowhere is there mention of what is on the DVD. (I therefore gave this a pass, not knowing whether it would be of interest or worth my time.) An index would also have enhanced this useful book.

I love this book. My mom used to read it to me when I was small, and it has always been one of my favorites. I lost my original book many years ago but now that I am an aunt I have searched high and low to relocate it as a gift for my nephew. About the Author

Ibrahim Essa is Egypt's leading independent editor, described as a "one-man barometer of Egypt's struggle for political and civic freedom". Throughout his career, he has faced prosecution when his push for media freedom has fallen foul of the government. In 2010, he was fired from his position as editor of the independent newspaper al Dostour, after new owners bought the paper; his popular satellite talk show was also taken off air. His sacking came in the midst of a wider media crackdown in the run-up to the parliamentary elections, when Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party emerged victorious amid accusations of unprecedented vote rigging.

PreSchool-Grade 2-Turk is "the biggest, strongest, and most graceful bird on Wishbone Farm." His younger brother, "Runt," has figured out why people come to the farm in November, but no one wants to listen. Their mother thinks that a young turkey will be singled out to be "the lead dancer in Swan Lake," and their father believes the chosen one will "play in the Thanksgiving Day football game." Runt remains the voice of reason throughout, humorously hinting at the truth, while being disregarded by the others. Much to his parents' dismay, Runt is able to drive away customers who are interested in his tasty-looking big brother. One November day, a little old lady comes along who decides Runt is just the right size for her holiday table. As usual, nobody pays attention to his cries for help, until his burly brother finally catches on. Safe for the Thanksgiving holiday, the birds finally acknowledge Runt's intelligence, and work together come Christmastime. Ansley's pen-and-ink and watercolor cartoons are a riot and elevate the simple plot to high drama. A silly, but thoroughly enjoyable holiday selection.

His brother, Runt, knows that as the best turkey on the farm Turk's dead meat, but no one ever listens to him. Two days before Thanksgiving, a famous ballet teacher arrives, compliments Turk's drumsticks, and is ready to take him home, but Runt acts crazy and saves his brother. Ditto when the football coach comes calling. Then, when a customer decides Runt is the pick of the litter, it is up to Turk to return the favor. Funny from beginning to end, this hits every note smartly, from the oblivious parents' hopes for their multitalented son, to Runt's clever asides. The last page, which shows the turkeys masquerading as snowmen for the Christmas rush, is a fitting finish. It's hard to imagine story and art working together any better than this. The watercolors move the action right along, and Ansley's got all the turkeys' expressions--pride, fear, horror--down pat. That's not easy when your subjects are, well, turkeys. Ilene Cooper

Turk and Runt will tickle the elementary school crowd

I got Turk and Runt after my kid fell in love with the Dino-Sports series by Lisa Wheeler. My five year old loves this tale about a fat juicy turkey named Turk and his little "Runt" brother who tries to save him from becoming someone's Thanksgiving Day feast. The parents are extremely proud and clueless.... Before the selection begins (people coming to select their bird on the farm) the parents are sure Turk will be the first one chosen. But chosen for what? They think he will be in a broad-way hit or part of a sports team. "He's a dancer," said his mother. "He's an athlete," said his father. "He's a goner," said his brother, Runt. No one seems to know what is going on but Runt. We will be reading this every Thanksgiving.

Turk and Runt

This story is a really cute story about 2 brother turkeys and how they save each other from being someone's Thanksgiving dinner. I first saw the book last year at a little private school and heard the librarian read it to each 2nd grade and 5th grade class on the day I was there. I borrowed it to read at the school 2 or my grandkids attend. They loved it, so I had to have my own. It's very entertaining. I would recommend this to families with younger children and every elementary library of teacher needs a copy.

Great Introduction

This book proved to be a great introduction to a period in history that i knew little about when i read it.

Although i read the book many years ago, i have read few history books that have surpassed Payne for writing style. He brings the whole period back to life, creating vivid characters and colourful events. The pace of the book is magnificent throughout.

The book left me longing to learn more about that period in history, so i went on to read book after book, chronicle after chronicle.

If i had to be critical of Paynes sweeping account of all eight crusades, i would say although the book is unbias, it definatly concentrates more on the crusaders prospective than the Islamic.

Read 'Arab Historians of the crusades' to obtain a basic Islamic view of the events covered in this book.

I can only agree with Sebastian. Although I read a lot of history, Robert Payne is one of the few authors I have read, who managed to write a book that reads a novel. Unbiased, factual, even humoristic in places.

A very good intro into the Crusades from a Christian perspective.

...for anyone wanting to get to grips with the Westminster of the 1990s, though as an official at the time, I recognise some but not all the characters in the plot. The mysteries of the Whips' Office are explained a little, and that's a start in reforming the Mother of Parliaments.

Another excellent book in the history of Marine Corps Tanks.The author, Ed Gilbert,refers to it as the last volume in his series.Hang around another 5-10 yrs.,Mr.Gilbert ;,with the world situation volume 5 or 6 may be needed before to long.

Well written history that is part of a multi-volume series beginning with WWII, then Korea and Vietnam. I recommend it - and I've read most of what is available on the subject.

A slow read but we'll worth it of Marine Armoured battles in the Iraq and Afghanistan. Plenty of detail and personnel stories about what it was like and the equipment used.
